Opening with an edge of uncertainty, soft brass fanfares immediately begin to build in intensity until bold harmonic lines rise to support the soaring melodic material. A flurry of rhythmic activity catapults the work forward in joyous fashion while lyrical lines continue in stark contrast. Eventually, the opening fanfare material returns while woodwind flourishes drive the work to an exciting conclusion!

The airiness and fanfares of this enchanting overture herald a new, less inhibited classical period in the works of Jean Sibelius. The lively main section in the major and the classical orchestration bear features that suggest an admiration for Mendelssohn.

The Way to Heaven was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Forcethwarted Hitler’s ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK. The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear thesignal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron’s Merlin engines bursting into life before they line up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs tointercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close. The Way to Heaven is geschreven in opdracht van de Britse Royal Air Force Music Services. The Way to Heaven wurde von den Royal Air Force Music Services in Auftrag gegeben. American Visions is a fast-paced and energetic composition featuring rousing brass fanfares, lively woodwind motives, and driving percussion. It was initially inspired to embody the sense of American vigor and patriotism. Musically, the main motive at mm. 4-12 runs throughout the piece and vacillates between duple and triplet rhythms. Players should be mindful to differentiate between the two rhythms, so there is clarity. Measure 39 represents a contrasting section, and should be thought of as dark and warm sounding as possible. I intended that the section would resemble the overall timbre of orchestral strings, and players could think of that when performing the piece. Measure 55 presents a triplet rhythmic motive that must be precise in timing and dynamics. At m. 66, be sure that the main melodic motive and the tenor saxophone, low brass, and chimes countermelody can be heard through the ensemble's texture. Measure 73 uses bell tone articulations that build to standard articulations at m. 76. For clarinetist Ayako Neidich and the NY Licorice Ensemble (a true musical bridge between New York and Japan), Ewazen has refashioned two of his fanfares, originally scored for other forces. An orchestral tone poem, Fanfare from Monument to Color and Light, was remade as a trumpet ensemble, and now finds new life as clarinet choir. His Front Range Fanfare, originally for brass ensemble, brings its grandeur and majesty to clarinets. These new settings bring a celebration by Ewazen to better clarinet choirs. For advanced performers.

Fanfare from Monument to Color and Light opens the set (from the orchestral tone poem written for the Colorado National Monument centennial), with melodic lines jumping through the shimmering ensemble. Front Range Fanfare, originally for brass ensemble (114-41470), was inspired by Ewazen's first glimpse of the Rockies rising up from the plains of Colorado. Says Ewazen, It is grand and majestic, with bold, melodic motives that leap and jump, leading to a resonant and celebratory chorale, bringing these two fanfares to a heroic finale..

Smith’s first published march. A bravura opening fanfare punctuated with the percussion forces open this march. The first strain gives us a jaunty tune with baritones and trombones playing the countermelody. The second strain refers back to the opening fanfares with percussion section soli banding about. A reserved trio tune played by clarinets, first horn and baritone are assisted with chromatic runs played by flute, oboe, muted first trumpet and bells. The opening fanfares return in the break strain, which then gives us a terrific trio strain. Accessible and playable for all musicians!

Fortune Favors the Bold by David Marlatt is a dynamic and exciting piece that captures the trials, tribulations, and victories in the life of an ancient gladiator. Triumphant fanfares herald him into the great Colosseum as he clashes with many foes. Bravery and skill are what keep him alive. Between battles he is reflective and contemplative. Could this be his final fight? With conviction and courage he rises to meet his next opponent, fighting with all his strength and daring. More fanfares announce his victory, but will this success be the one to grant him his freedom? There are solo opportunities for flute, alto sax, baritone, and bass clarinet. (4:50).

A brilliant and thrilling programmatic work from the pen of Rossano Galante, Sword Of The Titans is a musical portrayal of a journey of a group of titans in their quest to retrieve one of their stolen swords that was lost in battle. The sword possesses great magical powers and is vital to their reign. The music describes this adventure with dark, melodic lines in the horns, and majestic fanfares in the trumpets and trombones. Ultimately, the titans retrieve their stolen sword as the work concludes, utilizing powerful brass fanfares and woodwind ostinati. A magnificent tour-de-force for mature bands!

This exuberant expression of joy begins with a series of brass fanfares punctuated by percussion interludes and woodwind flourishes. Moving between bold multi-meter sections and lighter passages, the opening music propels forward until a reflective center section arrives, featuring solos for onstage and offstage flutes. The end of the work brings back all the intensity of the opening along with expanded fanfares and multi meter passages. Fantastic!

Festival March is presented in a new edition arranged by Richard Summers. It is a tour de force composition for advanced bands and hearkens back to a bygone era during the golden age of the band movement. Directors and students will hear operatic music from composer Victor Herbert who is best known for his Christmas classic, Toyland. This is a richly scored masterpiece that deserves to return to standard status in concert band repertoire. We are proud to bring you this new setting of this cherished classic.Festival March by Victor Herbert was written for the Pittsburgh Symphony and first performed under Herbert’s direction in Chicago on Dec. 9, 1901 celebrating the 12th anniversary of Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Also known as the Auditorium Festival March, he included it many times for programs of a festival nature. The main theme Auld Lang Syne, a famous Scottish folk song, is incorporated many times along with brass fanfares, interludes and march melodies. This band arrangement is very similar to the original orchestral composition. The missing string parts, the addition of the saxophone section and other band instruments, editing of the superimposed triplets against sixteenth notes, to one or the other, and articulations suitable for the band, were major challenges. The style of early twentieth-century American music is captured here. This arrangement will give band musicians access to a fine piece of music that could only be appreciated by orchestra musicians up to now. Although suitable for many occasions, this piece is a great way to begin or end a December holiday concert.  Notes to the ConductorVictor Herbert’s music can be interpreted in a romantic style, which is the conductor’s responsibility to read in nuance and musicality. The beginning and other triple-tonguing sections of this piece have a March of the Toys quality to it.  The interludes and Auld Lang Syne sections are legato and musical. The March sections can also be shaped musically.About the ComposerVictor Herbert was born in Ireland in 1861 and raised in Germany. When he moved to America in 1886, he joined the Metropolitan Opera as principal cellist and eventually composed many works including forty-three operettas on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I, including Naughty Marietta and Babes in Toyland. Victor Herbert conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1898 to 1904 and then was the conductor of his own Victor Herbert Orchestra. He formed ASCAP with a group of composers in 1914 and was the director until his death in 1924. Among his thirty-one compositions for orchestra, Festival March was a favorite of his and was eventually published by Carl Fischer Music.  .
