This familiar tune from the 1930s has become a favorite with jazzers over the years. Here's a wonderfully crafted arrangement in the six-horn format that starts out as a relaxed jazz samba then moves seamlessly into a medium swing groove.

From John La Barbera's acclaimed CD “On The Wild Side ” here is a masterful arrangement of the Miles Davis modal standard. Opening with a chorale the chart then slips into a classy jazz waltz treatment of the themeincluding a solo section featuring trumpet and tenor. The climactic ensemble chorus starts soft then builds to a furious level then the chart winds down to a quiet closing with the saxes. A genuine treat for the ears.

Jazz Ensemble Library – Grade 4This medium tempo samba features a quartet of alto tenor trumpet and trombone on the melody along with clever counterlines from the rest of the ensemble. A recurring unison bass lineriff holds it all together amid a solo section for alto and trumpet then a drum/percussion feature section. The tutti ensemble chorus starts soft then builds gradually to a roar before returning to the head.

Heres a terrific medium swing chart (recorded by the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on Heart and Soul) featuring a great groove a catchy melody and the craftsmanship of jazz master John Clayton. Also included is atrombone solo atake-no-prisoners sax soli and solo space for the bass. The shout chorus starts nice and quiet then builds to a deafening level with the ensemble roaring!

Alec Wilder's Jazz Suite for horn quartet harpsichord guitar bass and drums with four movements: Horns O'Plenty Conversation Piece Serenade and Horn Belt Boogie. This suite was composed in 1951 at the instigation of Mitch Miller a longtime friend of Wilder's and then the Head of Popular Music at Columbia Records.

Recorded by jazz great Cannonball Adderley this classic jazz standard has been skillfully arranged here for younger players in a moderate shuffle groove. The trademark opening “chant” is handled by pairs of saxes andtrumpets then answered by tenors trombones and the rhythm section. Also included is a written or ad lib. solo for piano and plenty of solid ensemble writing throughout.

Young Jazz Classics-Playing jazz should be fun and this carefully constructed arrangement for young players will certainly help make this happen. Alto and Trumpet take the melody at the top then the rest of the band joins in for a lively romp!

John Clayton penned this gorgeous ballad treatment for the great Joe Williams. With exquisite reharmonizations and carefully crafted accompaniment figures the mood starts out mellow then arcs beautifully to a full ensemble climaxbefore tapering to a quiet ending. Notably recorded by Clifford Brown and composed by legendary jazz pianist Duke Jordan Mark Taylor's arrangement features a medium swing style and a brief duet for tenor and trumpet at the top. Then the saxes take over and do most of the heavy lifting. Solo space is provided for tenor and trumpet with ample solid hits for the full ensemble.

Here is a beautiful arrangement of Charles Mingus' signature ballad featuring altos and trumpets playing the melody off the top then later joined by the entire ensemble. Sample written solos are provided for the short solo orsoli spots for trumpet and trombone. A jazz classic!

Jazz Classics for the Young Ensemble – Grade 3No one handles Ellington for younger ensembles better than Mark Taylor and this well-crafted arrangement shows why. Although Mark uses a written trumpet solo on thebridge the main theme is handled by the full ensemble playing primarily tutti rhythms. Included are solos for trumpet and tenor (written or ad lib.) then a brief double time swing section featuring the entire ensemble. We thinkthe Duke himself would have liked this one.

Mark Taylor uses a mix of small group playing contrasted with full ensemble passages in this early composition from jazz master Wayne Shorter. After a solo section featuring alto sax then trombone a sax soli leads to a short yet powerful tutti ensemble shout.
