This familiar tune from the 1930s has become a favorite with jazzers over the years. Here's a wonderfully crafted arrangement in the six-horn format that starts out as a relaxed jazz samba then moves seamlessly into a medium swing groove.

From John La Barbera's acclaimed CD “On The Wild Side ” here is a masterful arrangement of the Miles Davis modal standard. Opening with a chorale the chart then slips into a classy jazz waltz treatment of the themeincluding a solo section featuring trumpet and tenor. The climactic ensemble chorus starts soft then builds to a furious level then the chart winds down to a quiet closing with the saxes. A genuine treat for the ears.

Jazz Ensemble Library – Grade 4This medium tempo samba features a quartet of alto tenor trumpet and trombone on the melody along with clever counterlines from the rest of the ensemble. A recurring unison bass lineriff holds it all together amid a solo section for alto and trumpet then a drum/percussion feature section. The tutti ensemble chorus starts soft then builds gradually to a roar before returning to the head.

Here is a must-have jazz classic that has been performed by virtually every jazz artist from composer W.C. Handy and Glenn Miller to Herbie Hancock. That's because it is a clever and interesting tune - going from major to minor then back to major all the while keeping the blues form. Arranger John Denton creatively sets the groove as a swing shuffle right from the first note and it continues to build. Solo space for tenor sax along with the flexibility of optional parts makes this a winner.

This jazz gem from the pen of Tadd Dameron features an easy flowing swing style and adapts wonderfully for full jazz ensemble. Mark's arrangement includes a small group (alto tenor bari. trumpet trombone guitar and vibes) offthe top that contrasts nicely with the full ensemble figures. Also included is a swingin' sax soli solos for trombone and alto and a tutti full band chorus that starts out soft minus drums then builds to a peak.

Notably recorded by Clifford Brown and composed by legendary jazz pianist Duke Jordan Mark Taylor's arrangement features a medium swing style and a brief duet for tenor and trumpet at the top. Then the saxes take over and do mostof the heavy lifting. Solo space is provided for tenor and trumpet with ample solid hits for the full ensemble.

Discovery Jazz - Grade 1.5 Bill Haley & The Comets made the top of the charts with this hit back in 1955. And it's as fun now as it was back then! This easy chart will sound great with any band.

Michael has taken this familiar standard and converted it into a smooth-sounding Latin chart. Atrumpet/alto duet starts things out then the full ensemble gets into the act. No solos are required however a stop-time section features written or ad lib. drum fills.

Discovery Jazz - Grade 1.5 Here is a very easy version of Woody Herman's trademark tune. Mike's solid-sounding arrangement features plenty of tutti rhythms along with melody for saxes and answering statements in the brass. Theclassic shout chorus starts soft but then brings the chart to a rousing finish.

The definitive recording of this jazz classic is by Bill Evans with other notable recordings by Cannonball Adderley and Joe Henderson. Paul Murtha's arrangement for young groups features a Latin style on the head then switches toswing on the bridge. Includes very effective writing for all sections of the band as well as solo space for alto sax.

Young Jazz Classics-One of the most enduring compositions from Miles Davis' early career is this medium swing tune recorded on the 1954 album Walkin'. In this terrific chart for younger players Rick Stitzel uses some nifty phrase extensionsin the beginning then alternates the full ensemble with statements by a small group. Solos for trumpet and tenor sax are also included.
