On the 200th anniversary of Robert Schumann's birth an ambitious project is coming to a close: For the first time since Clara Schumann's Complete Edition of 1879-93 all of the works for Piano solo are appearing as oneeditorial project.Spanning almost ten years of painstaking work all of the Schumann titles published by G. Henle Publishers have undergone a careful revision. The Schumann expert Ernst Herttrich has closely examined eachedition and also dedicated himself to those works that were previously missing from the catalogue.The result is being published in this new collection comprising six volumes as well as study editions in a slipcase. Theyreplace the former four volumes (HN108-HN115). Arranged clearly according to opus numbers it includes not only all of Schumann's Piano works revised to reflect the latest scholarly findings but also informative accompanyingtexts alternative versions and much more besides.Being a complete works collection a general difficulty level cannot be applied to these volumes. XVII: 4-When he switched from the harpsichord to the fortepiano in the 1780s Joseph Haydn found he had a rich palette of sound colours and dynamic variations at his disposal and he employed them enthusiastically in his C-major Fantasy.This piano piece composed in early 1789 in a ?whimsical hour? was intended by Haydn to meet with approval from ?both connoisseurs and amateurs? not least because it is ?not too difficult?. Christine Schornsheim provideshistorically accurate fingerings. This stand-alone edition follows the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition and provides an ideal means for players to get to grips with Haydn?s experiments with the sounds of the piano.

If Bach Was A Cellist-The purpose of the series if Bach was a cellist is to live the fantasy that everything Bach wrote he wrote for the cello.The concerto in D minor (BWV 1043) for two violins string orchestra and continuo by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is one of his most loved works. Indeed the slow movement may be one of the most popular and loved pieces in the instrumental literature. Traditionally it is believed to have been written in Köthen where he held the position of 'fürstlischer Kapellmeister' from 1717-1723 a town that saw the birth of the Brandenburg concertos and the solo works for violin and cello. The Dorian church mode (the absent Bflat in the key of Dminor) would also speak for the younger Bach. Recent research however has shown that the orchestral parts carefully written out by Bach himself and found among the papers of his son Carl Philip Emanuel date from around 1730. The sophistication of the composition also speaks for a later date than Köthen. The original score has been lost.Always in need of concert material for his 'Collegium Musicus' in Leipzig Bach made a version of the present concerto for two harpsichords (BWV 1062). The original key was transposed to C minor so that the top note would not exceed a D but remain within the range of a standard harpsichord. Another C minor concerto (BWV 1060) for two harpsi-chords often heard in an arrangement from the 1920's for violin and oboe by Max Schneider and Max Seiffert speaks for two concertos in D minor for two violins by Bach.When arranging an orchestral score for the pianoforte one has to remember that a double-bass sounds an octave lower than notated. This is a welcomed fact when dealing with two instruments that play the original solo parts an octave down. At the same time for a transcription of this kind the ambition must be to avoid the cello soloists playing in octaves with the violin tutti parts - which is what would happen were they to share the same material. Born in Havana Cuba in 1895 Ernesto Lecuona is arguably Cuba's greatest serious composer. He was a gifted pianist who wrote hundreds of songs and piano works before he died in 1963. Most of his music is composed in a rich authentic Cuban style. The most famous of his works is Malagueña the sixth movement of his Suite Andalucia for solo piano which was first published in 1928. Malagueña has been recorded as a popular song (with added lyrics) as a serious piano work (even by Lecuona himself in the 1950's) and also as a jazz standard (Bill Holman's arrangement for the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the early 1960's.) Over the years it has been arranged many times for variousother mediums ranging from symphony orchestra to field arrangements for drum and bugle corps.In 1976 James Barnes arranged Malagueña for the University of Kansas Marching Band. A few years later with permission from the publisher he expanded this original arrangement into a full work for symphonic band called Prelude Fantasy and Fandango on Lecuona's Malagueña. After several performances in the spring of 1978 (most notably at the MENC Convention in Colorado Springs) this work along with over 200 other Barnes manuscripts lay fallow in the KU Band Library. While packing up his office belongings when he retired from The University of Kansas in 2015 Barnes came across this long languishing Prelude Fantasy and Fandango which remained in condensed score. In the fall of 2016 he completely re-composed the opening portion of the work reduced the number of required percussion and disposed of the two harps in his 1978 version. This new setting features evocative thinly scored extended solo passages for clarinet bassoon and flute before the full wind band concludes the work with a powerful dramatic setting of the main themes of Lecuona's masterful Malagueña.

If Bach Was A Cellist-The purpose of the series if Bach was a cellist is to live the fantasy that everything Bach wrote he wrote for the cello. It may also serve as a way for cellists to get close to Bach through works other than the six solo suites and the three gamba sonatas.Cello Concerto in C minor for two cellos and piano. C minor becomes a powerful key in Bach's hands. It sets the tone of the composition weight is added and one can even sense how it directs Bach's thought-process. The present concerto exists as BWV 1060 for two harpsichords but if Bach was a cellist his prefered version would have been for two cellos.
