Il choisit cependant parmi ces «Colinde» vingt mélodies pour les publier en tant que chants de Noël. Si dans la première édition, en 1918, ces dernières étaient encore conçues pour de petites mains d enfant «sans empan d octave», Bartók enrichit toutefois son édition révisée de 1936, que nous présentons ici, d une annexe avec des «modifications pour l exécution en concert» qui atteste que ces miniatures étaient désormais parfaitement abouties. L édition Urtext qui repose sur l intégrale des uvres de Bartók intègre pour la première fois ces variantes de concert directement dans la partition. Par ailleurs les mélodies et la traduction des «Colinde» donnent un aperçu des racines de cette musique de Noël un peu différente.
