Although often thought of today as a piece for a soprano soloist, Franck's Panis Angelius was initially written for a tenor, cello, harp, and organ. It was also incorporated into a mass for three soloists, chorus and orchestra. However, Panis Angelicus is usually performed outside of this context and has become quite a popular piece in its own right. This arrangement is for a string quartet and a soprano soloist, but a tenor soloist substitution is perfectly acceptable.
