The melody of this carol is from the Orchésographie, a
study of French Renaissance social dance, first
publised in 1589. It became a famous English carol by
the words of George Ratcliffe Woodward and the
harmonization of Charles Wood first published in "The
Cambridge Carol-Book, being 52 Songs for Christmas,
Easter, and other Seasons", London 1924.
