Stivori, Francesco, noted Italian organist and
composer; b. Venice, c. 1550; d. probably in Graz, 1605
or 1608. He was a pupil of Claudio Merulo. After
serving as municipal organist in Montagna
(1579–1601), he was organist to Archduke Ferdinand of
Inner Austria at his Graz court (from 1602). Stivori
was a significant figure in the movement to introduce
multiple choral writing to Austria. He publ. 7 vols, of
madrigals (1583–1605), 6 vols, of motets
