Vol.2 of the Cello tutor is a continuation of the Cello ABC. The basic principle remains unchanged: in addition to the most necessary minimum of technical studies, it offers varied, attractive musical material, grouped in a clear, comprehensible manner. The various chapters contain both simpler and more demanding works, so the teacher can select teaching material to suit students- abilities. Many of the pieces are in two parts or have piano accompaniment, so that by making music together, teacher and pupil can make lessons a musical experience rather than a duty. The textual instructions are supplied in three languages: German, English and Hungarian.

The se “playbocks” form a sequel to the authors Violin method for group instruction (BA 6623). They contain musical games, canons and songs in simple arrangements for one to three identical instruments, introclucing children to ensemble playing during their first music lessons. Each arrangement has a melody part joined by an accompaniment part on open strings and a fingered accompaniment for more advanced pupils, so that all children have a chance to play. The play- books end with several four-part pieces and can be combined for use in mixed ensembles.

This remarkable collection of 10 Passagagli, the only known composition by the Neapolitan string teacher Gaetano Francone (fl. 1688–1717), is a unique example of a virtuoso school for the cello, as well as an extraordinary source of knowledge on improvisation for scholars and for performers, on both baroque and modern instruments. Although the term ‘violoncello’ appears in the work’s title, the music indicates that the composer was writing for a non-standard instrument, one tuned a tone lower than the modern cello. To perform these works with the original left-hand position, today’s players should either adopt the Bb1–F–c–g tuning or transpose each work one tone higher. Francone’s method stands as precious testimony to the advanced technical level of cello playing in 17th-century Naples.
