Thomas Tallis's theme is the third of nine psalm tunes that he contributed to Archbishop Parker's Psalter in 1567. It is not known when Vaughan Williams first came across the melody, but he used it in The English Hymnal in 1906 (where it appears as No. 92). He later returned to it and appears to have used and elaborated on the tune in some incidental music he wrote for The Pilgrim's Progress, although there is now a gap in the manuscript held by the British Library. It is presumed that Vaugham Williams removed it in order to have it with him when he began work on his work for two string orchestras, now known as 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomsa Tallis'.The first performance was given by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the composer, at the Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester Cathedral on 6th September 1910.Publisher: Faber Music

Vaughan Williams' work represents the height of English Post-Romanticism after the turn of the century, which was characterized by fervent nationalistic spirit and a corresponding surge of interest in discovering, preserving, and performing traditional folk music. This arrangement includes elements of Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, A Sea Symphony, Linden Lea, and Overture to The Wasps, all seamlessly intertwined.

Written in 1912, the Fantasia on Christmas Carols was originally scored for baritone solo, chorus, and orchestra. In it, Ralph Vaughan Williams used three folk carols from his native country of England: The Truth Sent from Above, Come all you Worthy Gentlemen, and the Sussex Carol. Though shortened for time, this arrangement contains moments from each carol, including the solo cello opening. Though the melodies are mostly of unknown origin, the harmonies are uniquely the work of Vaughan Williams. This medley offers a unique alternative to traditional holiday programming, combining beautiful English carols with the skill of a world-renowned composer.

Reduction for two pianos of Vaughan Williams's earliest known piece for solo instrument with orchestra, written 1896-1904, and rediscovered in 2010. Showing influences of late 19th-century composers, but also hallmarks of Vaughan Williams's later style, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the composer's development.
