Philip Brink has spent his entire career building the knowledge to assemble this major book on the pedagogy of the Trombone. Below are his words to describe what the book entails. Trombonist's Toolkit was conceived as exactly that: a resource for troubleshooting one's playing, for working out problems, for advancing one's playing skills. It is NOT a method in the traditional sense - no weekly lessons, no planned schedule for arriving at a certain point after a year, two years, etc. The player [you, the reader] can search the topic list for specific problems in need of solution. Most of the topics are organized by general subject areas: air, embouchure, range building, etc. The source for most of what I write is my own personal experience as student, teacher, freelancer and orchestral performer. I owe a great debt of gratitude to teachers, mentors, colleagues and students past and present, for listening to my playing, trying out my concepts, putting up with my questions and so forth. Some of those people are present, some are far away, and sadly, some are no longer living. To all of them I say Thank you, and I hope those of you who read this can recognize what you told me! A word about the organization of the book: most of the concepts requiring practice and/or a physical approach are written out in a special manner; explanatory text is interspersed with exercises detailing a gradual approach to the topic at hand. The appendix contains a number of exercises all together, most of which were developed for my class at Mahidol University College of Music in Thailand. Philip Brink - 2019.

The eight versatile concert pieces in this book were written by Allen Vizzutti. The relatively short individual compositions can be wonderfully combined to form longer suites. For performance, you can either make use of the piano accompaniments provided on the CD, or a pianist playing from the printed score.(Demo version played by Ian Bousfield). The Enchanted Trombone contiene 8 eclettiche composizioni firmate Allen Vizzutti. “ The Trombone player's Vade Mecum was composed by André Lafosse for advanced trombonists who are preparing for their exams. Divided into three parts, this piece covers all the necessary elements to prepare the exams: - The first one focuses on technical challenges: minor common chords, melodic minor scales, diminished sevenths, high and low scales, chromatic scales progressing in thirds - The second corresponds to a scale of an octave in semi-quavers, each of its degrees being the starting point for an additional scale. Each scale is followed by its chords and the seven degrees and octave can be played both descending and ascending. This second part on its own represents 30 exercises of scales. - The last part is quite difficult with 25 exercises covering most of the other difficulties that could be encountered. These pieces are perfect to get ready and to overcome all the small weaknesses a player can have before a big contest or recital. André Lafosse (1890-1975) was a trombonist and a professor at Paris Conservatoire. He also composed a suite for brass quintet called 'Suite Breve' and recorded with Stravinsky.â€.

“Fren ch composer, Pierre Max Dubois (1930-1995) significantly contributed to the wind repertoire. Procession for Trombone and Piano was published in 1959 and remains prominent in the advanced trombonist's repertoire. Dubois' music is characteristically light-hearted with unusual harmonic and melodic textures. Procession for Trombone and Piano reflects Dubois' compositional characteristics as well as elements of grandeur, reflecting the title. A typical performance lasts about four minutes and fifteen seconds. Procession is essential to the advanced trombonist's repertoire. Dubois' work makes for an exciting and enjoyable performance for players and audiences alike.&rdquo.

Inspired by the tale of a legendary folk hero, Adolphus Hailstork’s tour-de-force for trombone and piano is a riveting portrayal of the steely strength and stamina of John Henry, a former slave who helped build the American railroads and ultimately outperformed a steam engine. This composition uses quotes from the spiritual Every Time I Feel the Spirit and the folk song The Ballad of John Henry. For advanced players. Duration: 13’_______________ _________________________ __Text on the scanned back cover:JOHN HENRY'S BIG(MAN vs. MACHINE)FOR TROMBONE AND PIANOInspired by the tale of the legendary hero, Adolphus Hailstork’s tour-de-force for trombone and piano is a riveting portrayal of the steely strength and stamina of John Henry, a former slave who helped build the American railroads and ultimately outperformed a steam engine.PROGRAM NOTES by the ComposerJohn Henry was born a slave in the 1840’s or 1850’s. It is important to remember that no one knows for sure if John Henry existed or is a tall tale created by writers. That is one of the things that makes the legend so intriguing.According to the legend, he grew to stand 6 feet tall, 200 pounds – a giant in that day.Though the story of John Henry sounds like the quintessential tall tale, it is certainly based, at least in part, on historical circumstance. There are disputes as to where the legend originates. Some place John Henry in West Virginia, while recent research suggests Alabama. Still, all share a similar back-story.In order to construct the railroads, companies hired thousands of men to smooth out terrain and cut through obstacles that stood in the way of the proposed tracks. One such chore that figures heavily into some of the earliest John Henry ballads is the blasting of the Big Bend Tunnel, more than a mile straight through a mountain in West Virginia.Steel-drivin⠙ men like John Henry used large hammers and stakes to pound holes into the rock, which were were then filled with explosives that would blast a cavity deeper and deeper into the mountain. In the folk ballads, the central event took place under such conditions. Eager to reduce costs and speed up progress, some tunnel engineers were using steam drills to power their way into the rock. According to the great American tall tales, on hearing of the machine, John Henry challenged the steam drill to a contest. He won, but died of exhaustion, his life cut short by his own superhuman effort. This composition uses quotes from the spiritual Every Time I Feel the Spirit and the folk song The Ballad of John Henry.JOHN HENRY’S BIG was composed for trombonist David Jackson.

Styli stic Etudes for Trombone was written for intermediateto advanced level trombonists, seeking to meet thedemands of the modern marketplace for performers. AsI often tell my students, it’s simply not enough to mastera single style and fake the rest. To make a living as aperformer, trombonists are expected to play many, manydifferent styles authentically. Classical performers studyhard and devote themselves to mastering the stylisticnuances of various eras, various composers, variousforms; jazz musicians seek to accurately reflect the stylesof everything from bar-room burlesque to Coltrane; hornbands in the funk, rock, ska and hip-hop idioms mustreflect attention to the details of their influences even asthey create new paths through popular music. This etude collection is an attempt to help studentsand their teachers work on the details associated withmastering each of these various styles. In order to perform with the correct feel, articulationand sound, trombonists must first get these concepts intheir head through diligent listening and then disciplinedpractice playing in every single style. The same wayorchestral players study the symphonic literature andexcerpts, or the way a professional jazz musician mightwork on chord changes in excruciating detail, a wellroundedtrombone player must master styles by listeningto and playing with great recordings. Most of the etudesin this book are based on styles from specific orchestralliterature, jazz standards and other styles such as NewOrleans’ funk music (Meters) or the music of JamesBrown and Tower of Power. One final note: some of these are hard. On purpose. Theseare not warm-ups that you can play through mindlesslyto get your face going. These are “study pieces†in the oldfashionedsense. They are designed to challenge you asa player, to make you a little uncomfortable. Some aretougher than others, of course, but none of them are easy.If you can play through each of these well, with greatmusicianship and impeccable technique, you will be anincredibly versatile instrumentalist and be able to secureperformance opportunities that are outside the comfortzone of many trombonists. Thanks for buying this book. I hope you enjoy workingthrough these, whether you’re a teacher, student, performer, or weekend warrior. I learned a lot by puttingthese together and I hope you find them useful and helpful.Stylistic Etudes for Trombone was written for intermediate to advanced level trombonists, seeking to meet the demands of the modern marketplace for performers. Most of the etudes in this book are based on styles from specific orchestral literature, jazz standards and other styles such as New Orleans’ funk music (Meters) or the music of James Brown and Tower of Power. How these etudes were conceived, composed and transcribed: The style or concept of the etude was thought out in my head and ear. I then improvised in that style and concept on my trombone, recording my efforts until I was satisfied with the etude. All along, my goal was to play the range of the instrument while emphasizing certain articulations, rhythms, range and, fundamentally, the intended style of the etude. The resulting etude was then transcribed by a terrific graduate student named Zach Bornheimer, who also works with many other classical and jazz composers as a copyist/arranger.Tips for working on the etudes: Seek out professional recordings that match the style of each etude to get a good idea of what the etude should sound like musically. My recording of each of these etudes is available for download and can be purchased online for a modest fee. Search for “Brantley Etudes†at either iTunes or CDBaby. Practice each etude very slowly and in segments as needed, using a metronome. Record yourself and listen for good technique, musicianship and authenticity of style with your sound, feel and articulations. Compare your own efforts to the sounds you’ve heard on recordings. Would you fit in that ensemble or band? If range is an issue, take certain notes or passages down or up an octave. Work on your fundamentals every day, including the techniques and skills needed for these etudes. Be patient! Small improvements every day result in big success over time. Always play with a wide dynamic range. Always play with line and direction. Always play with impeccable time as well as rhythm. Use a metronome to help with this. Always play in tune. You can work on this with a tuner as well as with drones. Play these for teachers, friends, peers and colleagues not only for their feedback but also for the experience of informal performance. An audience changes everything. Make music, listen to music, record yourself, play in public and have fun!One final note: some of these are hard. On purpose.
