Hans Abrahamsen 's Flowersongs (1973) for three Flutes. Score. 'I wrote Flowersongs for three Flutes in the spring of 1973, when I was 20 years old. Looking back now, 40 years begins to feel like a really long time and sometimes I think that it is as if someone in 1973 is talking about a piece from 1933! But in spite of this long time, this is still a very important piece for me. In Flowersongs , along with works like '10 Preludes' for String Quartet and 'Stratifications' for Orchestra, I feel that I was on my way to finding my own voice in the middle of the music of the great Central European modernist tradition from the 50s and the reaction from the 60s of the new simplicity, minimalism and the possibility of poly-stilisme. The English title Flowersongs links to the flower power movement and the hippie culture of the 60s and the early 70s, and the work is trying to find the power inherent in this imaginary world. Many of my later works have titles in German, for example 'Winternacht' (1976/78), 'Nacht und Trumpeten' (1981) and much later 'Schnee' (2006-08). If we think of Flowersongs in German, it must be Blumenlieder, and to me it now sounds suddenly very different, more romantic and into the world of Schumann. Perhaps it is also a way in which to hear the piece? Another thing is that the correct English title is Flower Songs (as two words) and not as one word like in German or Danish. This is perhaps the German connection, as I incorrectly wrote the title as one word: but perhaps it is also a kind of naivety, which is also part of the work. I cannot help but carry with me to this day the ideas from my early works. For example, there are clear links in this work from the 8th Prelude from '10 Preludes' and to Canon 2a from 'Schnee' from 2008. This work is written for the wonderful ensemble recherche and it was meeting them that made me consider making a version of Flowersongs for Flute, Oboe and Clarinet.' - Hans Abrahamsen.

With his three songs for mixed a-cappella choir (SSAATB) which were published under the speaking title of 'Fairy Land' in 2013, Hermann Grosse-Schware takes us to the wonderful land of fairy tales. All three six-part works are based on English-language poems by William Shakespeare. The first piece 'Over hill, over dale' from 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is characterized by melodic sequences and a distinctive rhythm which portrays the content of the piece headed 'Swift and Easy' as does the swaying 3/4 rhythm of No. 2 'Philomel, with melody'. In the lively 'Come unto these yellow sands' (No. 3) one seems to be experiencing the barking of the dog and the crowing of the cock at first hand.

England enjoys a rich folk song tradition. Composers such as Cecil Sharp and Vaughan Williams rekindled an interest in this heritage at the beginning of the 20th century by arranging numerous songs, some of which were transcribed for the _x001F_first time. The fact that Pascal Martine is a real expert in the field of sacred choral music shows once again in the 'Three Motets' for mixed a-cappella choir (SATB) by the Mainz-based composer and (choir) teacher. The three sacred motets on verses by the English bishop and hymn writer Reginald Heber (1783-1826) are characterized by a very individual dense and atmospheric musical language. Thus, they musically dwell on the contemplative character of the three English-language poems perfectly which is typical especially of the two prayers 'Evening Hymn' and 'O most merciful'. The four-part songs are mainly homophonic and perfect for church services.

1. Emerald Isle, in this part, the musical spotlight focuses in on the green island of Ireland and its great wealth of traditional folk music. The piece opens with the air ‘My Lodging Is on the Cold Ground’, also known under the title ‘Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms’ (bars 5-24). Next, we hear another well-known air ‘The Minstrel Boy’ (bars 29-44). Finally, the air ‘The Groves of Blarney’, possibly better known as ‘The Last Rose of Summer’ (bars 53-68) is heard. Each air is heralded by a short introduction and brought to an end by a short conclusion. 2. Old Kentucky Memories, following an introduction of 14 bars all attention is claimed by the song ‘My Old Kentucky Home’. As the piece goes on, snippets of memories emerge, fleetingly, surfacing fast, but quickly disappearing again: this is musically featured by way of small motifs and themes from other songs. These can be heard briefly, and then they disappear, musing on Old Kentucky until the introduction returns to end the piece. 3. Uppland, is a province in Sweden that had a rich folk music culture, like the whole of Sweden, that boasts many songs and dances. A notable amount of these songs and dances have been composed in minor keys, three of which feature in this part. First, we hear ‘Svensk folkvisa’(bars 1-38), followed by the famous ‘Värmlandsvisan €™ (bars 39-67) and then brought to an end by ‘Vexelsang’ (bars 68-end). 4. Ratatouille, in this part, no folk songs of just one country or one province are featured. This piece is a mishmash (or ratatouille), a hotchpotch of three folk songs with no significant relation at all. In succession, we hear a song from Russia (bars 1-30), one from Japan (bars 31-58) and one from Australia (bars 59-end). The composer of the Russian song titled ‘The Nightingale’ is Alexander Alyabyev (1787 1851), but the composers of the Japanese song titled ‘Sakura’ and the Australian ‘Waltzing Matilda’ are unknown.1. Het werkje opent met de air ‘My Lodging Is on the Cold Ground’, ook bekend onder de titel ‘Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms’ (maat 5-24). Daarna volgt de bekende air ‘The Minstrel Boy’ (maat 29-44). The Last Rose of Summer’ (maat 53-68). 2. Mijmeren over Old Kentucky dus... 3. Das Stück beginnt mit der Melodie My Lodging Is on the Cold Ground“, auch bekannt unter dem Titel Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms“ (Takt 5-24). Anschließend erklingt die bekannte Melodie The Minstrel Boy“ (Takt 29-44). Schließlich ist The Groves of Blarney“, vielleicht bekannter unter dem Titel The Last Rose of Summer“ (Takt 53-68), zu hören. 2. Elle s’ouvre avec « My Lodging Is on the Cold Ground », un air également connu sous le titre « Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms » (mesures 5-24). Vient ensuite un autre air célèbre, « The Minstrel Boy » (mesures 29-44), lui-même suivi de « The Groves of Blarney », peut être mieux connu sous le titre « The Last Rose of Summer » (mesures 53-68). 2.

Among the most intriguing of this pioneering American composer’s works, Three Songs on poems of Carl Sandburg is scored for Contralto with Oboe, Percussion, and Piano, plus an optional orchestra. The study score includes an essay introducing Crawford’s unique work in historical contexts as she sought a new musical language accessible to the many, while remaining uncompromisingly avant-garde.

Winter Songs comprises three contrasting songs for upper voices and piano accompaniment. Each song presents a view of winter that implores us to value kindness and compassion above all else. Hibernation sets the wintery scene, leading into the musical theater-style song Reality Check, a touching tale from the perspective of a homeless person. The jazzy and uplifting Presence completes the set with its swinging style featuring a fun scat section; the song's chorus is perfect for adding choreography. Winter Songs would be ideal for school and youth choir performances at any time of the year but particularly during the winter months, including at Christmas.

This cycle is a setting of three contrasting poems by Latin-American poets Leopoldo Lugones, Rube én Dari Ão and Jose é Marti Ã. Olas Grises uses evocative rain and sea imagery to meditate on the nature of life and death. Set as a lyrical, quasi-strophic song, these images are portrayed through the opening percussion raindrop motive and the moaning vocal line used throughout the movement. Nocturno is a frantic soliloquy set as an extended opera scene. The opening recitative is followed by a surreal aria. This is followed by a re-statement of both sections. Suen ño Despierto is a short poem about the contrasting images of a waking dream. Based on a fragment of the lullaby Nanita Nana, heard in its entirety at the opening, the song is a set of three variations, followed by a coda, which portray these various images. Three Spanish Songs was commissioned by Michael Haithcock and the University of Michigan Symphony Band. This is the recital/rehearsal version of this piece. The vocal solo with wind ensemble accompaniment is also available (00-29639/$150).
