In the evenings after dinner at Monticello Thomas and Martha Jefferson enjoyed nothing better than to play music. Each was an accomplished musician. Jefferson would play the violin, and Martha would often accompany him at the piano. He especially enjoyed the music of Corelli. Thomas Jefferson’s Fiddle Tunes is an effort to depict what a musical evening might have been at the farm with guests joining in, clapping, stomping, or dancing to the lively tunes. Three reels of the Colonial period are featured in this medley. Jefferson and Liberty, Smash the Windows, and The White Cockade. Each jig is introduced by a solo violin then the whole section joins in.

His music, often written for specific occasions or performers, was typically light-hearted and small-scale, with frequent reference to folk-music; larger-scale pieces included two piano concertos, concertos for violin, cello and recorder, and more than a dozen stage works. He was also an artist, craftsman and poet (with an enthusiasm for nonsense verse), whose work reflects the revival of interest in the arts and crafts during the first half of the 20th century. Running as a thread though everything he did was his unswerving love for the natural world and in particular the beauty of trees.

Volume 7 of the Tchaikovsky Studies combines two important studies not published in German until now on Tchaikovsky's way of working as can be gathered from his manuscripts. In her thesis published in 1988 in Russian only, Polina Vajdmans, the archivist of the Tchaikovsky Museum in Klin, gives an overview of the handwritten sources, notes, sketches and drafts of the composer, thus providing a fascinating insight into his 'workshop'. Thomas Kohlhase, the editor of the Tchaikovsky Complete Edition and one of the foremost experts on this subject, adds to it the documentation of his editorial work on Symphony No. 6. The result is a remarkable volume which presents two ideally complementary points of view from different perspectives.
