Volu me 4: Rhythms with ternary subdivisions (12/8, shuffle, etc.), fills, accentuations. This method focuses on understanding rhythms in relation to tempo and different phrasing. Each part begins with a clear and complete foundation, followed by an extremely methodical, comparative and step-by-step presentation of all the new techniques. Real drum scores that sum up the material in song form are inserted every twenty pages. To study this method, a prior knowledge of music theory is not necessary. After a summary of the basic music theory, the new rhythms are introduced gradually, which makes it possible to learn rhythmic reading very gradually. The rhythms, fills and scores are mixed, gradually increasing in difficulty, such that a beginner drummer can start playing in a group from the very beginning. More experienced drummers can start the method at any place depending on their level. The logical presentation requires little explanatory text and makes it quick and easy to understand. Each subject is presented on one or two pages to avoid page-turns. This method has four volumes. Although they are connected by a progressive common thread, each volume can also be approached separately and is suitable for both beginners and more advanced drummers.

The sonatas are not grouped according to their degree of difficulty, they are given in the order which corresponds with the Kirkpatrick nimbering. This is approximately identical with the order in which they were composed. In this way it became possible for the pairs of sonatas included in the selection to be placed closely after one another. Apart from inevitable minor alterations this edition follows the original text and its markings exactly. This does not apply to the fingering which is entirely an editorialaddition. (In the original there is no fingering.) Thes e previously unnoticed chamber duets for various pairs of voices and basso continuo are among the most original compositions from the pen of Diogenio Bigaglia (1678–1745), the Venetian monk who was also a skilled and imaginative composer. They are set to texts taken from the famously chromatic madrigals of Carlo Gesualdo published over a century earlier. The purpose of this choice was not to commemorate Gesualdo but to assemble a homogeneous group of short poems suitable for Bigaglia’s evident main aim, which was to produce a cycle of vocal duets imitating the structural layout and musical processes of the contemporary trio sonata.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy as letter-writer: at the heart of 19th century European cultureAs one of the most important letter-writers of the 19th century, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy maintained an extensive correspondence. With great style and eloquence he wrote letters to friends and family, letters from his travels and he also wrote to leading composers, musicians, artists as well as publishers. He corresponded with famous contemporaries such as Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner as well as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Carl Friedrich Zelter and Alexander von Humboldt. The correspondence begins in 1816 and ends in 1847 with the composer’s death. These letters are invaluable documents shedding light not only on the genesis, publication and revision of his musical works, but also on a period when relations between Christians and Jews still had a chance to become harmonious, as Moses Mendelssohn, the imminent scholar and grandfather of the composer had advocated. This edition will therefore be of great interest far beyond the circles of musicologists and music specialists. It will appeal to those who are interested in the history of culture and ideas and to those who perceive Mendelssohn and his family as representatives of a unique, diverse cultural epoch. The complete correspondence shows that Mendelssohn not only went on to become one of the leading figures of German musical culture in the 1840s, but that he also maintained a network of musical contacts throughout Europe. The edition of the complete lettersThis scholarly-critical complete edition comprises 5,855 letters by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Previously only a small part of his correspondence had been published and made accessible to the public. The complete edition is based on Mendelssohn letters which have been compiled over decades by Rudolf Elvers as well as on international research carried out by an academic workgroup in Leipzig spearheaded by chief editors Helmut Loos and Wilhelm Seidel. They determined 500 additional letters hitherto unknown. Versions of the letter texts have been compiled from a scholarly-critical analysis of the sources, their historical context has been discussed and comments on all points in need of explanation have been made. This edition of the complete letters consists of 12 volumes and a CD-ROM. Each volume contains indices of mentioned individuals and institutions, compositions by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Fanny Hensel as well as a register of place names and currencies. In this way one obtains an all-encompassing view of this unique historical cosmos. The Complete edition has been produced to the highest standards in terms of layout, cover and binding. It is an ideal collector’s item for bibliophiles, providing an excellent means for studying the composer and the period in which he lived. The CD-ROM forms a valuable addition to the printed volumes. It offers the complete printed edition in the form of pdf. files, thereby making its approximately 9,500 pages digitally accessible and enabling letters and the corresponding commentary to be read in parallel. All terms can be located quickly and conveniently via a full text search.(The 12 volumes as well as the CD-ROM can only be purchased complete).- German text onlyThe EditorsHelmut Loos is Professor of Musicology at the University of Leipzig. He specialises in the music of the 19th and 20th centuries, in particular the reception of Beethoven, sacred music and links between Germany and Central and Eastern Europe. Wilhelm Seidel was professor at the universities of Heidelberg, Marburg and Leipzig. His publications are devoted to the temporal structure of music, music aesthetics in the 18th and 19th centuries and music of the 16th to 20th centuries, currently on Mozart and Mendelssohn.

In this five-volume series of reflections, Fr. Foley stretches a common understanding of mystagogy beyond the narrow interpretation from the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, which sees mystagogy essentially as a period of post-baptismal catechesis. Mystagogy, in its fuller sense, is a treasured way in which Christians have examined their faith over many centuries. It is an embodied, affective, community-based style of reflection that juxtaposes the action of the liturgy with our own experience of that action, and asks a series of often pointed and always essential questions. It demands that we wake up in worship, shake off the passivity that has enveloped us after years of repetition, and look afresh at the sacramental events that define us. Go in Peace (an address reflecting on the dismissal that is not a conclusion but a beginning). The talks integrate familiar music with profound insights, and are perfect for use in the RCIA post-Vigil mystagogical process, for a parish staff retreat, or for personal spiritual reflection on the Mass and the Eucharist. Parish liturgy committees and other small groups will benefit from the accompanying booklet, which contains a process for reflection that includes questions to help delve deeper into the Eucharist as mystagogy. Also available as part of a 5-CD set, #002695.

Composed in 2015, RINGING CHANGES is in part derived from the fourth movement of Levinson’s Time and the Bell... The essence of that movement is a constantly evolving perpetual-motion single line in fluidly changing rhythmic groupings, and in shifting modes inspired both by Balinese gamelan and North Indian ragas (both authentic and invented), which is now developed in counterpoint. Another version of the original movement also forms the centerpiece of the solo piano work, Ragamalika.
