This is an updated edition of Francis Poulenc's 1957 work Sonata For Flute And Piano, edited by Carl Schmidt. The world premiere, at Poulenc's request, took place at the Strasbourg Music Festival, performed by renowned flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal, while the American premiere took place in the Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress. Ce recueil contient une sélection de mélodies composées par Gjovalin Nonaj, typiques de la musique folklorique des Balkans, adaptées pour la flûte. Cette musique se caractérise par la richesse de ses variations mélodiques, en ce sens, elle se différencie de la plupart des styles de musiques occidentales. Energie, nostalgie, mélodie et sens du rythme... contribuent à former une sonorité complexe, polymorphe. De nombreuses mélodies sont écrites dans des rythmes différents et irréguliers : on trouve beaucoup de mesures à 5/8, 7/8 , 9/8... avec des subdivisions très variées. La flûte s'est imposée devant les autres instruments traditionnels d'Albanie, notamment les instruments à cordes comme le lahuta (1 corde), le çifteli (2 cordes), le sharki (6 cordes). Il en est de même dans les au tres pays des Balkans (le sas en Bosnie, le kolo au Monténégro, l'oro en Macédoine et en Bulgarie). Cette musique peut bien sûr être jouée par d'autres instruments. Il ne faut pas oublier que ces musiques sont essentiellement festives. Comme toutes musiques folkloriques, elles participent à la vie des peuples et aux nombreuses fêtes familiales. Par DYENS ROLAND. Traveling Sonata, comme on peut le supposer d'après le titre, fut composée au hasard de mes voyages (en 2007). Ainsi, chacun des trois mouvements qui la divisent porte le nom de villes du monde plus ou moins célèbres : Bellinzona est le chef lieu de la Suisse italienne (dit aussi Tessin ou Ticino), Mottola est une petite ville italienne de la province de Taranto dans la région de Bari, chef-lieu des Pouilles (Puglie), enfin Ankara est, chacun le sait, la capitale de la Turquie. Trois personnes, de façon indirecte, auront oeuvré pour que cette oeuvre puisse un jour voir le jour : Jean-Louis Jolivet (alors directeur artistique des Editions Henry Lemoine) pour ses encouragements à publier ma première composition 'officielle' pour flûte et guitare, Larry Rawdon (revendeur d'instruments à cordes et violoncelliste américain) pour m'avoir recommandé de l'écrire pour le duo qui en deviendra le dédicataire-commissionaire, enfin Yannick Le Goff, mon vieux compagnon de route flûtiste, dont expertise et oeil de lynx m'ont fait croire que je savais convenablement écrire pour son instrument.
