The music of Handel is considered the culmination of the Baroque period of music history, and his Water Music (1717) has endured in popularity for nearly 300 years! Performed from a barge traveling on the River Thames, King George I is said to have liked the music so much that he ordered it repeated several times. Originally three suites each consisting of multiple movements, Johnnie Vinson has skillfully adapted this arrangement for young players using “Alla Hornpipe” from the Suite in D Major, and the “Air” and “Allegro” from the Suite in F Major. Duration: 4:20.

The depth and inventiveness of Amanda Harberg’s SUITE FOR WIND QUINTET can only be described as remarkable. Harberg combines the rich tradition of renaissance and baroque dance suites with her own American voice, stirring up dramatic, exciting sounds and stories. Cantus uses the imitative entries of renaissance motets as a jumping off point into a more contemporary world. The playfully virtuosic Furlana refers to the Italian folk dance rhythm in 6, punctuated by lots of unexpected 5’s. Fantasia hints at being a lullaby with an animated and jazz-influenced middle section, and the closing Cabaletta is true to its 19th-century meaning of a rousing closing section following beautiful lyricism. SUITE FOR WIND QUINTET was commissioned and premiered by the Dorian Wind Quintet.Amanda Harberg’s Suite for Wind Quintet was commissioned by the Dorian Wind Quintet in 2017. The piece was the result of a conversation in a bar between Harberg, Dorian’s flutist Gretchen Pusch and Pusch’s husband Richard Bayles, on the occasion of Dorian’s clarinetist Ben Fingland’s 40th birthday party. A year and a half later, the Dorian Wind Quintet gave the world premiere of Harberg’s quintet at Bargemusic, and has incorporated it into their repertoire ever since. Suite for Wind Quintet is in four movements- 1. Cantus, 2. Furlana, 3. Fantasia and 4. Cabaletta. The melodic material heard in the very opening of the piece can be heard recurring and transforming throughout the four movements, until it unites triumphantly in the final coda with the theme of the concluding movement. The piece was inspired by the concept of placing Renaissance and Baroque-inspired dance suites into Harberg’s idiom as a 21st century composer.

Contemporary British composer Brian Kelly has composed a series of place-inspired suites, including the Cuban Suite and the New Orleans Suite. The Suite Parisienne's four movements suggest the Paris of years gone by - Quartier Latin, Promenade, Memoire, Moulin Rouge - in music that shows a deep understanding of brass instruments and a lively, sophisticated setting of melodies that are almost, but not quite, French tunes. The solistic opportunities for each instrument are generously shared and the three livelier movements make a brilliant frame for the longing tone of the Memoire movement.

The English Suites are an early set of six suites written for harpsichord around 1718-1720. The name English has come from a claim that these works may have been composed for an English nobleman. This very imaginative arrangement for Trombone Quartet by Mr. Burgstahler is appropriate for advanced performers and is in eight movements:Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Sarabande embellished (added by the arranger), Gavotte I, Gavotte II and Gigue. This arrangement can be played in its entirety or even just a few of the movements, still with much satisfaction for the performers.

Written in 2001, this work was conceived by the need to enlarge the repertoire of works for solo cello, an important goal since the repertoire of such works is limited. Most cellists are limited to performances of such well-known solo works as the Suites of Bach, written almost 300 years ago, as well as other classics of the genre by Max Reger, Zoltan Kodaly, Benjamin Britten, Gaspar Cassado, Enric Casals, etc.The intention of the Suite Exotique is to revolutionize the concept of the Baroque suite by transforming the suite into a collection of modern dances, which are both contemporary and widely recognized today. Thus, the dances of the Baroque suite, such as Allemande, Courante, Sarabande are substituted for the Tango, Milonga, Blues in such a way that the traditional formal structure of six movements of Baroque dances is modernized by rhythms and contemporary styles which coexist in the Modern world, but are separate from and do not pertain to those works which are normally considered to belong to the realm of cultured music.Apart from the fusion represented by the mixture of a Baroque genre with modern, urban musical language found in this work, the subtitle exotica is appropriate due to the originality of writing such a work for cello solo. This work allows the interpreter to explore and take full advantage of their technical, artistic and expressive abilities. This work establishes a total symbiosis between the instrument and the evolutionary transformation of its musical language which in turn creates a style adapted to the expressive requirements of the work itself. The specific techniques and qualities of the cello are placed in service of the required style and concept of each movement of the Suite. At the same time those stylistic characteristics are transformed and adapted to the particular characteristics of the cello and taking full advantage of the instruments polyphonic, sonic, aesthetic qualities as well as its timbre. The Suite Exotique was premiered in August, 2003 during the International Music Festival of Ibiza by the Russian cellist Svetlana Tovstukha.

Handel's Oralorio Saul, composed in 1739, contains a series of instrumental movements which provide commentary on the action. Composers have often written works in the form of suites from these movements. Handel's blocks of polyphonic music are also particularly suitable for wind band. His orchestral suites were usually performed in Ihe open air. Many of his themes rank among the great inventions of musical history. They give his music dignity and greatness and at the same time they remain popular in character. The instrumental movements from 'Saul' are suitable for concerts, including those in churches, for serenades and for contests from intermediate to advanced level.(2 Floten, 1 Oboe ad lib., 1 Fagott ad lib., 1 Klarinette in Es ad lib., 3 Klarinetten in B, 2 Alt-Saxophone in Es, 1 Tenor-Saxophon in B, 3 Horner in F, 3 Trompeten in B, 3 Posaunen, 2 Flugelhorner (Kornette) in B, 1 Tenorhorn in B, 1 Bariton, 2 Tuben, Pauken, Schlagzeug: Glockenspiel, kleine Trommel, grosse Trommel, Becken).
