Essentially a vocal composer Britten won international fame for his operas and song-cycles. He never abandoned the principles of tonality and was a 'modern' composer who reached a mass audience and a conservative whoseoriginality no radical would sensibly deny. He shared with his predecessors Parry Vaughan Williams and Holst an intense interest in works for amateurs and children. His brilliant gifts as a pianist and conductor coupled withhis virtuosic inventiveness also led him to compose music for great performers such as the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and the singers Galina Vishnevskaya Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Janet Baker.The greatestpersonal influence on his music was the Tenor Peter Pears for whom he composed many operatic and vocal roles. In 1948 Britten Pears and Eric Crozier founded the Aldeburgh Festival now one of the most respected established fornew English music. Denmark Revisited - Danish choral works for mixed voices a cappella.The University Choir Lille MUKO and soprano Else Torp conducted by Jesper Grove Jørgensen.For many years now there has been a broad international interest in performing Danish choral works not least from the 20th century but often the Danish lyrics have been a hindrance in realising this goal outside Denmark. With this in mind we have thought it important to make Danish choral music more available through the release of selected works in which the Danish text is translated into English. With the present choice we have endeavoured to present works which fullydemonstrate the wide range and originality of Danish choral music: the particular lyrical Danish tone of Svend S. Schultz and Jørgen Jersild; the original simplicity of Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen; the characteristically Danish late romanticism of P.E. Lange-Müller and Rued Langgaard; and the music of composers with their own particular musical idiom such as Vagn Holmboe Bernhard Lewkovitch and Bo Holten. We have also tried to choose works with lyrics by writers that are specifically Danish in origin including Hans Christian Andersen Johannes V. Jensen and Tove Ditlevsen. Rebecca Clarke's Come oh come my life's delight for SATB.for unaccompanied SATB to words by Thomas Campion.This is a lilting take on the Elizabethan lute-song full of smooth Stanford-like nineteenth-century harmonies exquisitely tempered with modal effects.Rebecca Clarke was born in Harrow in 1886 and died in New York City in 1979. She was one of the finest Viola players of her day and a skilful composer who studied with Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London. Her output as a composer was small comprising about 90 works but all these pieces are brilliant and powerful. Her Piano Trio and Viola Sonata are often playedand recorded and are now widely regarded as masterpieces. However her songs are perhaps her finest body of works and embrace a variety of styles from Blakean simplicity to brutal tragedy and outright farce. Rebecca Clarke's choral music was virtually unknown until Oxford University Press began to publish these works for the first time. She wrote for chorus and other vocal ensembles throughout virtually her whole career from her earliest attempts at composition around 1906 to her final flowering in the 1940s revising and recomposing until as late as 1976.
