A Glimpse Retraced is scored for piano solo, flute (dbl piccolo), clarinet in Bb, violin and violoncello. The title of this concerto for piano with four instruments is a metaphor for its formal design: a fleeting observation, made in passing, is retraced and elaborated, then condensed and distilled. Eckardt's A Glimpse Retraced was commissioned by Carnegie Hall and is dedicated to Marilyn Nonken, who gave its first performance in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, New York City on April 12, 1999.

The inspiration for Tread Softly came from two contrasting sources: the religious music of early medieval Spain, and Debbie Locke’s work of art ‘Retracing Your Steps - Bristol I’. Although over a thousand years apart, these two sources share a common feature - a powerful sense of movement enclosed within a static form. In early Spanish music this manifests in the use of extended melisma, and in Locke’s work it is depicted through the seemingly moving, web-like form of the central image. Tread Softly explores the idea of movement within stasis through the use of a main melodic gesture that transforms very slowly, but constantly, throughout.

The ensemble work “Scattered Shades,†composed in 2014, of the Chinese composer Guoping Jia for the instrumentation flute, clarinet, violin, violoncello and piano was premiered on 21 May 2014 in Beijing at the 'Beijing Modern Music Festival,' performed by the ensemble 'Les Temps Modernes.' Although this work received its essential inspiration from ancient Chinese pen-and-ink painting, it also simultaneously documents the overcoming of a creative crisis. During an artistically difficult period, Jia assigned himself the task in 1997 to compose a study that was to supersede the compositional techniques used so far with the means of rational construction. “Scattered Shades†has recourse to this study, retracing its structure in a more profound way with a different ensemble.

An original by Bach Sr. and Jr. Klaus Hofmann has retraced the path to the ur-sonata! With convincing arguments, he has shown that two well-known Bach works were originally based on one and the same model that is no longer extant. He believes that both the Trio Sonata in G major BWV 1038 and the Violin Sonata in F major BWV 1022 are concealing an original work for violin, viola and basso continuo a work that can easily be reconstructed by a Bach expert. Hofmann has already given ample proof of his unerring sense of style and authenticity in the two B flat major Trio Sonatas (KM 2277 and M 2287). He diplomatically attributes the authorship of the newly recovered sonata to both Johann Sebastian and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel to equal extents. This should preclude any posthumous family arguments, and lovers of Baroque chamber music will be delighted with this rare example of an original Bach piece for viola!
