Ports of Call, a suite of five movements for two violins and guitar was written for the Trio Triento for their New York debut. Composed in the Summer of 1992, it was premiered in April 1993. 1992 was the 500th anniversary of the 1492 expulsion of the Jews from Spain and, of course, Columbus' trip to America. To commemorate these important events, I was commissioned by organizations in 20 major cities to write an oratorio. The result was Ever Since Babylon. The musical material was greatly influenced by tunes from around the Mediterranean region. These Sephardic melodies took on treat meaning for me, and I took five of them and expanded them into these five pieces which are actually dances. I felt that the combination of two violins and guitar lent itself well as a vehicle for this music. The names of the cities are used because the tunes originated in these particular locations. Marseille, a typical provencale dance with naturally changing meters and a light, airy, touch. Alexandria, much more mysterious and languid, reflecting the heat and inertia of that glorious city in slow though sometimes steady movement. Salonika, a wild dance in typical Greek fashion celebrating a holiday with abandon. The whirling movement goes relentlessly from beginning to end. Haifa is represented by two beautiful chant-like pastoral tunes which introduce the beauty and luminous quality of this, one of the most beautiful parts in the Eastern Mediterranean. Valencia, the last, a tribute to medieval Spain. The music is a culmination of the influences of the three great cultures, Moslem, Christian, and Jewish, which flourished there for hundreds of years. It is an uplifting dance with just a tinge of sadness in the center, since the Golden Age of which the tune was a part, had come to a tragic end in 1492. --Samuel Adler.

The Legend of Spirit Island was commissioned by the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra, Duluth, Minnesota (Mark Whitlock, conductor), to honour the euphonium player, Dick Carlson. The piece takes its title from a local legend about Spirit Island, which lies in a gap of the St. Louis River called Spirit Lake. The legend tells the story of Chaska, the son of a Dakota Chief, and Wetona, the daughter of Ojibwe Chief Buckado. He was handsome and she was beautiful; it wasn’t long before they fell in love. This is a challenging euphonium solo in which the versatile soloist can explore very expressive melodic sequences, as well as energetic, technical sections.

Amers is the title of a book of poems by Saint-John Perse, dedicated to the sea. It is also the title chosen by Kaija Saariaho, born in Finland in 1952, for a work completed in the studios of IRCAM in Paris. Amers is the French word for 'navigation beacons', strategically spaced along the coast for sailors. One of the earliest ideas about the piece was the effect of a solo cello “as a sailor charting a course through a sea of soundsâ€, but his journey, scattered with phrases defined by the existing sound material, is hampered by the surroundings. To a certain extent Amers is a concerto, even though the composer has tried to avoid the usual duel between orchestra and soloist. Instead the piece divides naturally on three levels - each with a certain independence. The cello, juxtaposed with the instrumental ensemble and with computer generated sounds, cannot reach its scheduled ports of call directly and is often pulled off course.

The DJM-A9 raises the bar for club standard, professional mixers with stunningly clear sound quality, enhanced playability and connectivity, and a host of new features to take performances to the next level. The DJM-A9's new layout design makes it more instinctive and comfortable to play. Spacing was added around the EQ knobs. The channel faders and the MAGVEL FADER crossfader are slicker than those on the DJM-900NXS2, to enable performers to mix and scratch more efficiently. And the Sound Color FX include the world's first Center Lock feature, to ensure artists don't accidentally cross over between the hi/low parameters. Beat FX are more instinctive to use on the DJM-A9 thanks to the new color display and revamped X-Pad, which is now arranged horizontally for simple, sideways finger sliding. The Beat FX channel selector is now a dedicated button, enabling quicker effect routing, and the Multi I/O section has been upgraded to offer true send capabilities. In total, there are 14 Beat FX to play with, including 3 new ones. Through fine-tuning and improved construction with carefully selected components, the microphone section of the DJM-A9brings new possibilities when streaming or MCing. Artists can connect a condenser mic directly to the DJM-A9 for the best possible vocal sound quality thanks to the phantom power supply to the mic input, which is an industry-first feature on a DJ mixer. To dynamically change the sound of the artist's voice, there are 3 different mic effects plus a dedicated reverb to play with. Changing DJs or playing back-to-back is a breeze on the DJM-A9 thanks to the dual sets of USB Type-B and Type-C ports, which enable artists to connect two PCs/Macs running either rekordboxor Serato DJ Pro. And the mixer's expanded connectivity opens up new possibilities for artists performances. If an artist wants to play tracks from a mobile device, Bluetooth®/MDinput makes it easy on the DJM-A9. The audio can be routed to any channel, and an artist can use all the mixer's effects to change the sound.
