Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 6 Clavierübung III / Schübler-Choräle / Canonische Veränderungen über 'Vom Himmel hoch' - ed. by Werner Breig Bach Organ Works Printed During the Composer's Lifetime Volume 6 contains the chorale-related organ works that Bach personally had printed: the Dritte Theil der Clavier Übung was published (for organists) in 1739; the Sechs Choräle von verschiedener Art (Schübler-Choräle) and the Canonische Veränderungen were released in separate editions most likely in 1747/48. None of these collections had from the start the appearance which the composer considered as valid in the end. For this reason, Werner Breig focuses in particular on questions of origin in his introduction. Fundamental findings on the genesis of the Clavier Übung III were made only after the publication of the work in the Neue Bach-Ausgabe. The basically unproblematic state of the sources means that this volume contains no CD-ROM with supplementary materials. It was, however, considered editorially necessary to print the Canonische Veränderungen BWV 769 in three versions: as a facsimile of the original print, in a practical arrangement, and in the autograph version (BWV 769a). Johann Jacob Froberger (1617-1667) was a composer of considerable significance during his lifetime, his compositional style representing a synthesis of Italian, French and English influences. Jehan Alain (1911-1940) was a French organist and composer. The second volume of Alain's Organ Works is comprised of Variations on a Theme by Clément Jannequin The Suspended Garden and Aria as well as other favourites from the composer. Alain studied with Organ virtuosos Guilmant and Vierne and was primarily an organist and composer of religious music. Whilst at the Paris Conservatoire Alain won many prizes and his composition catalogue comprises some 140 works. The compositions in the second volume of Organ Works by Jehan Alain are full of life mirroring his personality. From lively and comical pieces to sensitive and unexpected works Alain's pieces are diverse in musicality. Moreover the composer exploits Organ techniques making for an exciting and varied collection for intermediate to advanced level organists.

When Reubke died in 1858 at the age of only 24 his achievements included two monumental works (a Piano sonata and an Organ sonata) and a few smaller compositions including a Trio for Organ. This Urtext edition brings together the two Organ works in a new edition: the Organ sonata is also known by the title of the 94th Psalm whose words inspired its content. The Sonata whose style and virtuosity show the influence of Liszt is one of the greatest Organ works of the whole Romantic period. The Trio a musically charming but technically less demanding piece should represent a welcome addition to the teaching repertoire forOrgan. The only original documents remaining for these works are the first editions. In this new edition we have attempted to correct obvious mistakes in the first impression and to offer cautious suggestions for improvements in dubious instances.
