Modern French composer, organist and improviser, Jean Langlais (1907-1991) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. He is best remembered for his Masses and Organ works, Nine Pieces being no exception. Published in 1945, the Nine Pieces for Organ reflect Langlais' compositional uses of Gregorian chant and polymodal harmonies. The Nine Pieces are entitled; 1) Song of Sorrow, 2) Song of Joy, 3) Song of Peace, 4) Heroic Song, 5) In quiet Joy, 6) Out of the depths have I cried unto Thee, 7) My soul longeth to depart in peace, 8) Prelude on an Anthem, and 9) Gregorian Rhapsody. Catholic and Protestant churches are familiar with the tradition that in times of crisis, new works are composed to comfort the faithful, and are performed in worship. Following in this tradition, the project Orgelmusik in Zeiten von Corona (Organ Music in Times of Corona) was devised. 17 new compositions were commissioned which reflect Corona times, creatively confront the past and the present, and will enrich the repertoire of organ music in a lasting way.
The 17 compositions depict a wide range of styles including avant-garde, jazz and classical, and some refer to music from previous eras and church music traditions. They are conceived for different levels of difficulty, are for 2 or 3-manual organs, and last between four and ten minutes. They are particularly suitable for concerts, but can also be played in church services.

Born in 1965, Thierry Escaich studied in Paris where he obtained eight first prizes for Organ and Composition. His performances and works during his professional career have also received various distinctions, Three Sketches for Organ being no exception. Composed in 1991, Three Sketches is very modern, exploiting tonality, rhythm, harmony, and many other elements to a virtuosic level. Esciach's is a great improvisation expert and Three Sketches reflects aspects of this through use of complex rhythms and developed melodies. Joan Cabanilles was cathedral organist in Valencia and the towering figure in Spanish organ music of the late 17th century. His brilliant and diverse musical language, rooted in the traditional sounds of Spain, has not managed to reach a large audience outside the Iberian peninsula, although he is often called “a musician of European stature”.

The aim of this three-volume Urtext edition is to grant access to his most appealing works. To this end, all available sources in the libraries of Astorga, Barcelona, San Lorenzo de el Escoreal, Felanitx/Mallorca, Jaca and Montserrat have been examined and newly evaluated.

If Cabanilles’s oeuvre consists primarily of tientos, organ hymns and versets, the third and final volume contains three versos, three pasacalles, two galliards, two toccatas and such special forms as Paseos de tercer tono, Diferencias de Folías and a Jácara.
