Waldschrats Nachtlied is a concert piece that is practically guaranteed to make a major impact. In the dark of night, a hobgoblin and his companion are whisking about the forest. The tempo is brisk, and the permanent change of meter ensures productive turbulence. At the beginning, the roles of the two instruments are distributed rather traditionally; then the violins and the pianos upper part are briefly led in genuine parallel motion in the monolithic section. Afterwards, the virtuoso chase through the woods continues as before.World premiere: Halle, February 16, 2002.

Nach tlieder (Night Songs) is Salonen's early work dating from 1978. It is in fact a sort of descendant of Alban Berg's Vier Stucke fur Klarinette und Klavier op. 5 (1913). Like Berg, Salonen has condensed his Expressionist night songs into concise, miniature-like proportions. The four-movement work is dominated by a meditative mood and the expressive melodies of the clarinet. This arrangement for ensemble by prof. Gregory Barrett is scored for flute, tenor saxophone, percussion, violin, viola, violoncello, double bass and the solo clarinet.

Hymne an die Nacht is a deeply moving theme by the master composer Ludwig van Beethoven. It is taken from his Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (Appassionata), which he composed between 1804-1806. This theme originates from the second movement of this famous sonata which Beethoven himself considered his best work in this genre. The passion of this sonata inspired Michael Bilkes to make this beautiful arrangement.

Jacob de Haan wrote this arrangement for concert band, fanfare band and brass band and optional male voice choir. The original carol was written by the Austrian composer and organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). He was asked to write Silent Night on the 24th of December 1818 by the priest of the Church of St. Nicolas in Oberndorf, who had himself written the text. It is a romantic carol, with nuances of contemporary Austrian folk and Italian pastorale music.
