Charm ingly packed with wit, grace, symbolism, and irony, Shulamit Ran’s THE FLIGHT OF THE BRAVE CHICKEN celebrates the life and work of a graphic artist and illustrator (who played clarinet), who lost her battle with cancer as a young adult. The six-minute duo begins as a dramatic dialog for bass clarinet and piccolo, gradually evolving to peaceful resolution for flute and clarinet. The work may be performed with projections of the original art panels that inspired the work.Brave Chicken was a character developed by Nina Frenkel, gifted illustrator, graphicartist, and beloved friend to many, who passed away at the age of 43 having lost adifficult battle with cancer. Her parents, Marcel and Anne Frenkel, approached mein May 2017 about composing a short work in Nina’s memory, suggesting that it bebased on four delightful panels that Nina had painted in 2014 before she knew of therecurrence of the disease.Titled “Brave Chicken Meets the Ogre,” “Brave Chicken Fights the Ogre,” “BraveChicken Flees to Safety,” and “Brave Chicken in the Healing Hut,” the four panelsdepict a progression from darkness to light. And while my composition does notattempt to follow the four panels literally, I did aim to create two distinctly differentmusical characters who are posed against one another with one clearly perceived asdominant and threatening, and trace the evolving change in the balance of power, and with it the journey from darkness to light.Inspired by the knowledge that Nina herself greatly enjoyed playing the clarinet, Idecided to pair bass clarinet with piccolo, eventually switching the piccolo over toflute, with clarinet appearing in time for the work’s peaceful conclusion. Though I hadnever met Nina, I felt honored to compose this work in her memory.

This new piece from composer George Sweet is a delightful combination of Scotland the Brave and Amazing Grace. Each tune on its own is wonderful, but in Sweet's setting, they are masterfully layered to reflect the composer's Scottish-American heritage. This presentation of a Scottish melody with Americana-inspired harmonies is a stunning example of compositional craft.Bravery and Grace is a setting of the unofficial Scottish national anthem, Scotland the Brave. While the melody is taken from Scotland the Brave, the accompaniment and harmony both have a “Western Americana” feel, reminiscent of composers like Roy Harris and Aaron Copland. This combination of a Scottish melody with American harmony is a reflection of the composer’s Scottish-American Heritage. The piece begins with a fragment of Scotland the Brave presented in a lush and reflective context. The main theme is performed in full by the upper voices at m. 9. The middle voices perform the material at m. 17, and the lower voices perform it again at m. 33. This results in a loud passage representing pipers at m. 46. The traditional spiritual Amazing Grace appears suddenly at m. 51 in a somewhat polytonal setting. This is, once again, reminiscent of practices of the aforementioned American composers. After this lyrical presentation, a fragment of the main theme returns at m. 66. This is followed by a broad restatement of the theme at m. 70 and a brisk conclusion with a final flair of polytonality.

This piece is about a journey unlike any other in 2020. We have all been touched by the devastating effects of COVID-19, and we have seen friends, family, and many others succumb to it. For the people who are left behind this piece is dedicated to you, the brave warriors that have survived this pandemic. The piece is set in Eb major with a 4/4 time signature. The beginning starts off robust and full, with the tempo at quarter note= 150. Measure 25 presents many opportunities for shaping to move the melody and counter melody lines around as the ostinato is being played in the percussion and low brass. I wrote mm. 43-51 as a percussion feature. I felt in my eighteen years of experience as an educator that we always have plenty of percussionists! Double students on parts if you have way too many. Overall, this piece has many places for beautiful phrasing and shaping. You will need to assign the students places to breathe in order to achieve maximum effort from the group. I hope you enjoy my new piece The Brave Warrior. This piece is about a journey unlike any other in 2020. This new piece from composer George Sweet is a delightfully unique combination of Scotland the Brave and Amazing Grace. Each tune on its own is wonderful, but in Sweet's setting they seem as if they were meant to be together. It surely shows the influence that Scottish immigrants had on the music of America. This is a stunning example of compositional craft.

Home Of The Brave stems from a final sentence in the Star-Spangled Banner – that the United States’ flag would forever stand. John M. Pasternak takes a contemporary approach to the Star-Spangled Banner as the melody line is woven through various instruments as solo lines on top of new and intriguing harmonies. The work culminates with the traditional playing of O say does that Star-Spangled Banner and then fades into the distance.
