ThePetite Messe solennelleis the finest work of Rossini's late years. He composed it between 1863 and 1864 at the age of 71 as a commission for Countess Louise Pillet -Will for the consecration of her private chapel, where the work received its first performance in March 1864. Together with theStabat mater, the mass is one of the composer's mostimportant sacred works. The unusual instrumentation with two pianos and harmonium is entirely in keeping with the Neapolitan keyboard tradition of the 18th century which was cultivated in France in Rossini's day. It forms a distinct contrast to the style of large-scale sacred compositions as written by, for example, Liszt and Bruckner. Rossini explained that he wrote the later orchestral version of the work dating from 1867 out of concern that if he did not do this, other composers might orchestrate the mass too heavily in later arrangements.- Choral score based on the Urtext of the seriesWorks of Gioachino Rossini- Supplements the already existing material available to this work

Sacred works occupy a large part of Charles Gounod's oeuvre. It was the Messe solennelle en l'honneur de Sainte Cecile that established his fame as a church composer. Its melodic invention and effective handling of the orchestra reveal a close proximity to opera. This Urtext edition is based not only on the original print of 1856 but also on copyists' manuscripts and autograph sources. Rounding off this well-researched Urtext edition are an informative Introduction and a detailed Critical Commentary. The edition is being published to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Gounod's birth.

TheMesse de Requiemis probably the internationally best-known and most frequently performed work by Gabriel Faure . The composer's first version was limited to just five movements and small-scale forces with low strings, harp and organ. The work was then expanded several times culminating in the version for large orchestra of 1900. This orchestral version forms the basis of this edition.Despite its comparatively long period of gestation, the Requiem forms a stylistic unity. Unlike other requiem settings, the composer foregoes any theatrical gestures in this work. A restrained dynamic range together with graceful melodic writing for both soloists and choir give the work a gentle and optimistic character. The choral score just as the vocal score are based on the volume of the Complete Works of Gabriel Faure (BA 9461) published in 2010. It is important to note that this choral score is also compatible with the first small-scale version as well as the second chamber orchestra version.- High-quality Urtext edition based on theComplete Works of Gabriel Faure- First systematic evaluation of all sources- Based on the large orchestral version of 1900- Choral score suitable for all versions of the Requiem
