Autograph lays bare Mendelssohn's Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream To this day, Mendelssohns epoch-making Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream has been performed on the basis of a more than dubious transmission. Neither the first edition of the parts (1832), and certainly not the print of the score based on these parts (1835) go back directly to the autograph of the 17-year-old composer, which is now located in Krakow. No wonder, since Mendelssohn had breezily given away his original at an early date. The result: during his lifetime, versions were published with his authorization, even though they were full of unintended inconsistencies. Yet the autograph of 1826 is unequivocal: it is clear, practically free of irregularities and diverges considerably from the corrupted printed version. Christian Martin Schmidt comes up with occasionally differing musical passages, but above all with logical and compositionally compelling performance instructions, laying bare to musical practice the original form buried beneath layers of falsified material for the first time.Christian Martin Schmidt is laying bare to musical practice the original form of Mendelssohn's epoch-making Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream buried beneath layers of falsified material for the first time.

The enigmatic title of Roger Zare’s overture is an anagram of Zauberflöte — the work is based on Mozart’s The Magic Flute, breaking down themes from the opera’s overture as well as the Queen of the Night aria, and spinning them out of control. Zare’s charming and clever work includes an “Overt Metrical Fugue,†(a serendipitous anagram of Magic Flute Overture) using a subject that mashes up all of the disassembled Mozart motives. After the fugue runs its course, Zare quotes small but recognizable parts of the overture almost verbatim, but only from the players farthest away from the conductor to create a disembodied sound. This work is based on Mozart’s overture to The Magic Flute, breaking down the themes and motives from that overture as well as the famous Queen of the Night aria, “Der Hölle Rache,†and spinning them out of control. While the title seems to be nonsense, it is actually an anagram of “Zauberflöte.â I’m sure that Mozart would have appreciated the humor in this work, even though the harmonic language is quite far removed from the Classical era. The piece opens with repeated E-flats, suggesting the beginning of the main theme of the Magic Flute overture, and it gradually expands outward chromatically, creating gritty dissonances. Other borrowed motives from Mozart creep their way in, as well as complex polyrhythms on the repeated notes. I imitate the structure of Mozart’s overture by writing a fugue (subtitled “Overt Metrical Fugue,†a serendipitous anagram of Magic Flute Overture) using a subject that mashes up all of the disassembled Mozart motives. Gradually, I work in references to the excessively high coloratura part of “Der Hölle Rache,†treating it as a second subject. After the fugue runs its course, I quote small but recognizable parts of the overture almost verbatim, but only from the players farthest away from the conductor tocreate a disembodied sound.

Brigh t Dawn Overture was commissioned to Franco Cesarini by the Swiss Band Association as part of a project for the renewal and expansion of the artistic repertoire. “There was never a night or a problem that could defeat sunrise or hope.â€. This sentence by the English philosopher Bernard Williamsinspired Franco Cesarini in composing this overture. In fact, even the darkest night is always followed by the sunrise and metaphorically, in every moment of difficulty, man clings to the hope of a better future. Bright Dawn Overture is written in the classic form of an Italian overture (fast-slow-fast). It is intended as a hymn of hope of recovery after a period of great difficulty. A single theme characterizes the composition, passing through the various registers and presents itself in new forms, while constantly being transformed. In the central part the theme takes on an almost mystical character, while in the finale it presents itself in a heroic guise and the composition concludes with a gesture of decisive optimism. A piece accessible to most concert bands, perfect as an opening work!

Brass town Bald is the highest point in the U. S. state of Georgia standing at 4,784 ft. It is located in the northeastern part of the state and is part of the southern Appalachians. The mountain received its name from the Cherokee word Itse'yi (New Green Place) or (Place of Fresh Green) referring to its grassy, instead of timbered summit. The term Brasstown came from a confusion of Itse'yi with Untsaiyi (brass). The mountain itself is known to the native Cherokee people as Mt. Enotah. The term Bald is common terminology describing mountaintops that have 360-degree unobstructed views. Brasstown Bald Overture was written to depict the beauty and grandeur of the panoramic views from the top of this mountain. The opening fanfare sets the mood for the majesty of the Appalachians. The addition of the woodwinds during the second time through the fanfare portrays the dancing sunlight across the mountain peaks. The middle section is a quaint folk tune to represent the quiet stillness of the night. The fanfare return and a new day breaks forth.Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the U.
