Tribute to a Maestro is an homage to Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 1764), one of the most important French Baroque composers. Rameau was a hugely significant composer, organist, harpsichordist and music teacher: he also published several authoritative books on music theory. Jan de Haan based this tribute on a theme from ‘Les Sauvages’ (The Savages), the fourth act of Rameau’s ballet-opera, Les Indes Galantes (The Amorous Indies). The work begins with two variations, whereupon the striking theme can be heard. After a short intermezzo, four more variations follow, of which the last one is composed in Baroque style. Tribute to a Maestro is een hommage aan Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 1764), een van de belangrijkste componisten uit de barok. Deze Fransman was niet alleen componist, organist, klavecinist en muziekpedagoog, maar ook muziektheoreticus. Hij publiceerde verschillende toonaangevende boeken over muziektheorie. Jan de Haan baseerde dit eerbetoon op een thema uit het oeuvre van Rameau, namelijk ‘Les Sauvages’ (De wilden) uit de vierde akte van een van Rameaus balletopera’s, Les Indes Galantes (De hoffelijke Indiërs). TRIBUTE TO KEROUAC, version for solo piano by David Alpher was inspired by the work, life, and times of Jack Kerouac, King of the Beat Generation. Cast in 7 movements, this significant composition is hugely influenced by jazz. In the preface to the score the composer writes: Kerouac demonstrated the epic contradiction of America: on the one hand its wild energy, joy of life, and expansiveness; on the other, its tendency to self-destruct. Tribute to Kerouac is my musical response to, and commemoration of, this important American writer who liked to describe himself as a 'jazz.poet.'The ensemble version of this work (for clarinet, tenor sax, piano & string bass) is recorded on Ongaku Records #024-112.

The poem “The Resurrection” by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock was set to music by Gustav Mahler in the fifth movement of his Second Symphony, known as the “Resurrection.” The central passage from Mahler's musical adaptation was incorporated into “A Tribute to Mahler,” a composition created in homage to Mahler, 100 years after his death. Powerful brass tones and delicate woodwind melodies alternate in a Mahleresque manner with horn and trumpet signals from a distance. The choir is delicately complemented by the solo alto saxophone. “A Tribute to Mahler” aims to, like a continuation “after a short repose,” offer us a glimpse into the blissful world to which we will all eventually journey.
