The colourful and richly diverse music of the Balkans became popular in Western Europe during the 1990s resulting in what can only be described as a Balkan boom which still endures today. This selection of arrangements provides the opportunity for clarinettists to become acquainted with well-known traditional songs and dances from Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Dalmatia. Memoires is composed by Hidan Mamudov himself. Presented in an order that reflects their increasing level of difficulty, these pieces provide new experiences for intermediate to advanced players. Traditional: Biljana platno belese Traditional: Bosanska carlama Traditional: De se thelo pia Traditional: Klakar Mamudov, Hidan: Memories Traditional: Moja mala Traditional: Pajdusko Traditional: Pravo Traditional: Rachenica Traditional: Rampi Rampi These duets are an excellent introduction to the world of Balkan music. This is an exotic world where players have been educated to play largely by ear, and with dazzlingly complex rhythms coloured with much ornamentation. Styles of music from several Balkan countries are covered, namely Macedonia, Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. This is a very interesting collection of duets which should awaken the curiosity of any player who has reached about grade five level. Clarinet and Saxophone, Autumn 2012
