Germaine Tailleferre first met Charlie Chaplin when she was living in New York City with her first husband Ralph Barton. Tailleferre and Chaplin spent a great deal of time improvising at the piano and Tailleferre convinced him to write his own themes for the music he used in his films. After her divorce from Ralph Barton, she did not see Chaplin until the early 1950s during a visit he made to Paris. At that time, she wrote this attractive waltz in Chaplin’s own style to give to him as a gift.

In 1959, Germaine Tailleferre wrote incidental music for a radio drama based on Philippe Jullian’s « Mémoire d’une bergère » or « Autobiography of an armchair » which traced the owners of this armchair from the court of Louis XV to England after the French Revolution, back to Paris and through the hands of various foreign owners (Arabian, American, German etc.). In illustrating this story Tailleferre used her great knowledge of musical styles to evoke these different settings, from the classical styles of French music of the XVIIIth century to classical, romantic, popular French styles as well as two evocations of American Blues/Ragtime music. These short pieces are interesting in and of themselves, in addition to illustrating Jullian’s story. The first piece may be repeated at the end, as it was in the original radio drama.

During the middle of the 1950s, Tailleferre explored more popular musical styles in a series of works, including her Opéra-minute Un Rouille à l’arsenic », a number of songs written with Claude Marcy and her musical comedy « Parfums ». This slow is from that period and is very influenced by a Jazz piano style, perhaps by her friend Jean Wiener.

Arne Nordheim VIOLIN CONCERTOThe Violin Concerto was composed in 1996 as a commission from the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra for Arve Tellefsen. The solo part has the leading role in the work and is very difficult to play. The composer and Arve Tellefsen, therefore, were very much in contact with each other during the composition of the work.Arne Nordheim says that for this concerto like in other works he has composed, ideas have come to him so to speak out of nowhere. 'It is as if parts of me are extreme; that which is low down or high up, that which is very weak or very strong'.The composer has himself told how he has worked with gradual condensation and dissolution in the concerto. It is possible to hear continuous changes of mood in the work but the fundamental mood is, according to Nordheim, sadness.

These four short pieces are from various sources. The incomplete Exercise d’harmonie is the only Conservatory exercise that Tailleferre kept and clearly shows the influence of Wagner at the time of her studies. The Marche funèbre (comique) was probably from a film score in the late 1930s, « Chats » was part of a documentary film score about animals vers 1950 and Course à l’échalotte was also probably from a film score, evoking children’s games.

Leprince consort, originaire d'Allemagne, importa bon nombre de traditions de Noel allemandes au Royaume-Uni. Ainsi, il fit decouvrir aux Anglais la coutume du sapin et les cartes de Noel, entre autres, contribuant largement au Noel typiquement anglaistel que nous le connaissons aujourd'hui.Bien que les chants de Noel font l'objet d'une longue tradition en Angleterre, de nombreuses melodies que nous chantons proviennent ducontinent europeen ou des Etats-Unis. Je savais bien que le celebrissimeSilent Night (Douce nuit) etait d'origine autrichienne et que Hark, the Herald Angels Sing (Ecoutez le chant des Anges) etait d'origine allemande. Pourtant, quelle ne fut pas ma surprise d'apprendre qu'Away in a Manger (Sur la paillefraiche) ou encore We Three Kings nous venaient des Etats-Unis et que Ding, Dong Merrily on High etait un noel d'origine francaise. An der schönen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube Waltz) has had more success as a concert waltz than in the original choral version: since its victorious performance at the World Exhibition in Paris (1867) it has achieved fame world-wide. InAustria An der schönen blauen Donau has even become an unofficial anthem. At the traditional New Year’s concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic, this waltz—along with Radetzky March by Johann Strauss the Elder—is always played as anencore.Als concertwals heeft An der schönen blauen Donau meer succes dan in de oorspronkelijke koorversie: na de glorieuze uitvoering bij de Wereldtentoonstelling in Parijs (1867) werd de wals wereldberoemd. In Oostenrijk werd An der schönenblauen Donau zelfs tot officieus volkslied uitverkoren. Bij het traditionele nieuwjaarsconcert van de Wiener Philharmoniker wordt deze wals (naast de Radetzkymars van Johann Strauss sr.) altijd als toegift gespeeld.Als Konzertwalzer hatte An der schönen blauen Donau mehr Erfolg als in der ursprünglichen Chorversion: Nach der siegreichen Aufführung bei der Weltausstellung in Paris (1867) erlangte der Walzer Weltruhm.
