“A mendicant woman from the Haynstrasse aged 59 years Anna Magdalena née Wilckin widow of Mr. Johann Sebastian Bach cantor at the St. Thomas School” – thus reads the entry dated 29 February 1760 in the Leipzig 'Ratsleichenbuch” (City Register of Deaths) for a woman whose name has become known throughout the world thanks to the two music books put together for her by Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach himself opened the book with two of the large Partitas subsequently published in the first part of the 'Clavierübung”; the rest of the contents was determined by Anna Magdalena. Minuet BWV 929 comes from the collection entitled Small Preludes and Fughettas and was probably written as teaching material. Easier Piano Pieces 18-This is a delightful collection of 18 short preludes composed by J.S. Bach and edited here for Piano by Hedwig McEwen and Kethleen Long.The preludes are here grouped in three sets of six each. The first group comes from the Wilhelm Friedemann Bach Notebook compiled by J.S. Bach for the instruction of his eldest son. However Nos. 3 and 6 may have been composed by the son under the guidance of his father. The second group which has been preserved in copies made by his pupils was probably composed by Bach himself. The third group comes from the collection of Johann Peter Kellner - Nos. 1-4 were probably the work of Bach's pupils but no.5 and no.6 wereundoubtedly written by Bach. Bach married the young Anna Magdalena in 1721. For her 24th birthday Bach presented her with a beatuiful elaborate notebook. Over the years the notebook was filled with favourite selections of members of the Bach family many in Anna's handwriting. The simplicity and accessibility of the pieces do not undermine their melodic beauty or harmonic sophistication making them an excellent choice for the introduction of Baroque music to young musicians.
