Symphonie no. 1 The Lord of the Rings [Le Seigneur des Anneaux] La première symphonie de Johan de Meij 'The Lord of the Rings' [Le Seigneur des Anneaux] est basée sur la trilogie romanesque du même nom de J.R.R. Tolkien. Depuis leur parution en 1955, ces livres ont fasciné des millions de lecteurs dans le monde entier. La symphonie est composée de cinq mouvements séparés illustrant chacun un personnage ou un épisode important de ce grand succès littéraire. L'oeuvre est écrite pour orchestre d'harmonie, avec des parties réservées au saxophone soprano, au bugle et au piano. Les différentes parties sont intitulées : I. GANDALF (The Wizard) [Le Magicien] II. LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood) [La Forêt des Elfes] III. GOLLUM (Sméagol) IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK [Voyage dans les Ténèbres] a. The Mines of Moria [Les Mines de la Moria] b. The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm [Le Pont de Khazad-Dûm] V. HOBBITS La symphonie a été écrite entre mars 1984 et décembre 1987 et a eu sa première à Bruxelles le 15 mars 1988, interprétée par la Musique Royale des Guides Belges sous la direction de Norbert Nozy. En 1989, la Symphonie LE SEIGNEUR DES ANNEAUX remporte le premier prix du Concours International de Composition Sudler à Chicago. This transcription for brass band, arranged by the composer has the following movements: I. GANDALF (The Wizard), IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK (The Mines of Moria and The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm), V. HOBBITS. The symphony was written in the period between March 1984 and December 1987, and had its première in Brussels on 15th March 1988, performed by the The Royal Band of the Belgian Guides under the baton of Norbert Nozy. In 1989, the symphony The Lord of the Rings was awarded a first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in Chicago, and a year later, the symphony was awarded a grant by the Dutch Composers Fund. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.
