His Last Works

The first performance of ?Má vlast? as a six-part symphonic cycle took place on 5 November 1882. With the founding of the Czech Philharmonic in 1896 this work received a far greater reception. Since 1952 the music festival ?Prague Spring? has opened with this complete cycle.

This edition is based on the ?Study Edition of the Works of Bedrich Smetana?, vol. 14, supplemented by an up-to-date detailed foreword about the genesis and history of the work by Marta Ottlová.

Gerard Bunk (1888?1958) was one of the greatest organists of the first half of the 20th century who, besides Reger, was able to develop his own characteristic style. His organ compositions divide into free individual works, character pieces, chorale preludes and six large-scale concert works.

Volume IV contains organ works composed between 1912 and 1915, comparable in quality with works by Max Reger and Sigfrid Karg-Elert. Harmonically bold and full of individual style, they are one of the last milestones in the late Romantic style before the advent of the Organ Reform Movement.

This Urtext edition, prepared by the composer?s grandson, is the result of extensive, meticulous research into the sources and reflects the latest musicological findings. Each volume contains a detailed foreword, numerous facsimiles and illustrations and a critical commentary.

Ludwig Schytte (1848-1909) was a Danish composer and pianist who spent most of his life living and working in Germany and Austria. Born in Jutland he studied with Franz Liszt before settling in Vienna where he taught for twenty years. He wrote around 175 works with opus numbers most of which were published in his lifetime including two operas and a Piano concerto. Most of his compositions were shorter works for the Piano and many of his pedagogical studies are still used today.25 Studies For Piano (25 Leichte Etuden Fur Pianoforte; Op. 160) was published in 1908 making it one of the composer’s last works. It has remained popular withPiano teachers and students for over a century.

Hardback-This volume contains newly edited versions of four important later orchestral works by William Walton: Capriccio Burlesco Improvisations on an Impromptu of Benjamin Britten Prologo e Fantasia and Varii Capricci. The first three works were written for American orchestras: Capriccio Burlesco was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra for its 125th anniversary year in 1968; the Improvisations based on a theme from Britten's Piano Concerto No. 1 was written in 1969 and dedicated to the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra; Prologo e Fantasia was written in 1981-2 for the National SymphonyOrchestra of Washington DC. The last work Varii Capricci was a free transcription for orchestra by Walton of his Five Bagatelles for Guitar and written for the opening of the Royal Festival Hall in 1976.

Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) was a Danish musician often seen as his country’s greatest composer who now occupies a distinguished platform in the national and cultural heritage of his native land. Among the hundreds of violin concertos written by Vivaldi, which stand at the centre of his activity as a virtuoso, there are three that are in part incomplete: RV 370, RV 378 and RV 745. While only a portion of the first movement has survived in the case of RV 378, RV 320 lacks only a few bars at the end of its third movement, and only the last movement of RV 745 is extant. Incompleteness of this nature does, however, result in performable and perfectly enjoyable texts. The manuscripts of these three concertos are all autograph and datable to Vivaldi's last creative period (c. 1730-1741), years in which the Red Priest mixes his various musical experiences to create a language that is increasingly disparate and introspective.
