Passion Music After Bach
ISBN 9790004215838. 10 x 12.5 inches.
This Passion oratorio Gethsemane und Golgatha was composed in the astonishingly short period from 22 to 28 July 1838 on a text by the evangelist Wilhelm Schuber, a close friend of Friedrich Schneider's. The premiere took place on Good Friday, 29 March 1839, in the Dessau Castle and City Church under the composer's direction. Contemporary reviews rank the curious work ... with respect to the form, in line with the Passions of the great J. S. Bach, constructed with such pious meaning and high art [...] and then get rather similarly carried away in effusive statements. The composer himself took utmost control of how his work was to be used and also most effectively involved the listening congregation in the performances by using for the chorales melodies that were sufficiently familiar from the worship service. At the same time, Schneider points out that the work was to be performed only in an ecclesiastical context. Purely as a Passion oratorio, Gethsemane und Golgatha fits in between the Johann Sebastian Bach Passions and Carl Loewe's Das Suhnopfer des neuen Bundes.Passion Music After Bach.

From the cantata Calvary's Love (55/1194L), this anthem from Jay Rouse is set in the garden of Gethsemane and features the familiar words from James Montgomery. In a mysterious, flowing tone, the imagery of the garden and the death of Christ is vividly represented in this musical setting.

Written to commemorate the Passion of Christ, this cantata is a moving tribute to His life and ministry. Composed for maximum flexibility and scored for SA(T)B voices, the optional cued notes make it possible for the cantata to grow with your choir. Smaller choirs will enjoy the rich textures and larger ensembles will be able to engage their full resources. For churches that desire an instrumental component, a very modest consort instrumentation creates a reverent accompaniment. This motet for mixed choir a cappella interweaves newly composed variations of Brahms' folksong In stiller Nacht with a musical setting of the Passion events from the New Testament, with the experience of the disciples staying at the garden of Gethsemane, to be precise. The musical action develops from homophonic, harmonic vocal setting and seemingly early church declamation of a chorale, with solo passages symbolizing Jesus lamenting in the presence of his sleeping disciples, to complex eight-part vocal texture. The character of a melancholy night watch remains decisive throughout.

Shar on Elery Rogers combined Go to Dark Gethsemane and Beneath the Cross of Jesus for this evocative setting that will enhance any Lenten worship service. To make bell changes smooth and effortless, the director may want to spread the assignments of the many accidentals throughout the choir. (Formerly AMHB37).

An optional three, full octaves of handchimes are intermingled with the bells in this original work inspired by Christ's prayer in Gethsemane. The chimes are optional, but extra effort should be made to include them, as they add so much to the contemplative nature of the work. The gamut of Christ's emotions is portrayed through quiet, building, and strong passages. Finally, in the last ten measures, one can almost hear Jesus say, Thy will be done. 81 measures.
