Edited from the sources by Jochen Reutter-Franz Schubert's scherzos were right at the beginning of a development that in the course of the 19th century resulted in the separation of the scherzo from the sonata and its emancipation as an independent Piano piece. These traces become apparent in the three pieces compiled in this volume: the two popular Scherzos in B flat major and D flat major (D 593) and the Scherzo in D major (D 570) which has survived together with an allegro fragment in the composer's autograph. With its pleasantly flowing melody its typically Schubertian harmony and the modest technical demands this piece might soon outrank its well-known sister work in B flat major.

Schubert's great C minor Sonata D 958 was composed in 1828 just a few months before his death, along with the late sonatas in A major (D 959) and B-flat major (D 960). Conceived as a triptych, they constitute his musical testament to the piano sonata genre.This scholarly-critical edition by Walburga Litschauer is based on the 'New Schubert Edition? and presents this masterpiece in a spacious new engraving. Composés tous les deux en 1827, c’est-à-dire un an avant sa mort, ce sont des oeuvres caractéristiques de sa maturité, riches d’une grande invention mélodique alliée à une forte puissance créatrice formelle et une profonde expressivité. Si le trio en Mi bé-mol majeur op. 100 D 929 fut vendu à l’éditeur de Leipzig Probst (il ne parut cependant que juste après la mort de Schubert), le trio en Si bémol majeur op. 99 D 898 ne fut pas imprimé du vivant du compositeur. L’adagio en Mi bémol majeur op. post. 148 D 897 reproduit en annexe et connu plus tard sous letitre de Notturno fut conçu à l’origine comme mouvement lent du trio en Si bémol majeur. Schubert pourrait l’avoir considéré comme impropre à la publication du fait de son caractère sombre et expressif jusqu’au désespoir. Il ne parut d’ailleurs qu’en 1846. La Sonate en Sol majeur, de vastes dimensions et exigeante techniquement, a vu le jour en octobre 1826, deux ans avant la disparition de Schubert. Elle fait partie des trois seules sonates pour piano qui parurent encore sous forme imprimée du vivant du compositeur. Le titre inhabituel de la première édition ? Fantasie, Andante, Menuetto et Allegretto ? est dû à l?éditeur Haslinger. Il fait référence à l?atmosphère rêveuse et mélancolique du 1er mouvement, qui ne correspondait pas vraiment à la conception traditionnelle d?un mouvement initial de sonate. Il est ainsi peu surprenant que la «Fantaisie-sonate», comme on l?appelle encore souvent de nos jours, ait, par son caractère libre et romantique, enthousiasmé des artistes tels Franz Liszt ou Robert Schumann, qui l?a qualifiée de «totalement accomplie, tant par la forme que par l?esprit». La présente édition urtext se base sur un réexamen approfondi de toutes les sources connues, notamment l?autographe de la British Library.
