In order to enable a complete performance the movements only extant in fragmentary form have been carefully reconstructed in accordance with up-to-date research.

Franz Schubert's scherzos were right at the beginning of a development that, in the course of the 19th century, resulted in the separation of the scherzo from the sonata and its emancipation as an independent piano piece. These traces become apparent in the three pieces compiled in this volume: the two popular Scherzos in B flat major and D flat major (D 593) and the Scherzo in D major (D 570) which has survived, together with an allegro fragment, in the composer's autograph. Masterpiece Edition-Franz Schubert was born in Vienna in 1797. He was involved in music at an early age learning music theory and many different instruments including piano violin organ and voice. During his brief but prolific life he wrote a wide variety of music. His compositions included symphonies piano sonatas piano duets operas masses chamber works and several hundred songs. Among the hundreds of songs the most loved and revered is Ave Maria. Ave Maria was first published in 1826 under the German title Ellen's Gesang 111: Hymne and die Jungfrau (Ellen's Song 111: Hymn to the Virgin). The text used was taken from a novel written by Sir Walter Scott entitled 'Lady of the Lake'. It was then translated into German as it appeared in Schubert's song. After Schubert's death in 1828 the Latin text began being used and eventually surpassed either the use of the German or English text. 'Antiphon of the Blessed Virgin' is a text which has been used in religious contexts since the beginning of Christianity. This vocal classic was originally envisioned as a devotional piece but over time the magnificent beauty of both music and text has made this song equally popular for secular performances. Mozart's works for Piano duet form the first highlight of this genre which later is only achieved by Franz Schubert. The two early sonatas from the Salzburg period which are particularly suited for music teaching in secondary schools are opposed to three effective compositions from his Viennese period. The present volume also contains the sonata KV 19d the authenticity of which is not confirmed as well as two fragmentary movements dated from Mozart's last years of life KV 357. Robert D. Levin has completed them true to style for practical use taking the limitations of the keyboards of the Mozart Pianos and the composer's personal style into account unlike as in the first edition of ca. 1860. In the appendix there are the two fantasias KV 594 and 608 originally composed for mechanical organ adapted from the earliest arrangements for piano duet published a few years after Mozart's death. In this edition the music text is published in the form of a score for the first time.

Franz Schubert’s Sonata in A minor D. 821 was originally written for piano and arpeggione an instrument of the 1820s combining features of the guitar and the cello. This instrument was in use for just a short period of time so that the composition has now become standard repertoire for cello and piano and this is the version presented here. A handwritten violin part in the hand of Anton Diabelli kept by the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris however shows that the sonata’s arpeggione part was initially arranged for violin long before the first print in 1871 introduced the well-known version for cello and piano. WienerUrtext also publishes Diabelli’s arrangement for violin and piano in a separate edition. Both editions are essentially based on Schubert’s autograph the cello part in principle relies on the first printed edition of 1871 the violin part is based on Diabelli’s arrangement.
