Four Traditional Songs is a setting of four heartbreaking and poignant folk songs by virtuoso contemporary composer Nico Muhly . Composed in 2011, the songs deal with themes of death, murder and unimaginable events that are emotively arranged for Countertenor Voice and Piano. Commissioned by Carnegie Hall in New York City and Wigmore Hall in London, this work was first performed at those renowned venues in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Muhly states that he drew inspiration from old English folksongs, and would spend time imagining stylised yet subtle musical settings with accompaniments. The result of this intensive period of listening is Four Traditional Songs , whichlasts around 15 minutes and carries that incredible sense of sad balladry that counters the occasionally jaunty melodies. This edition is for Countertenor Voice. Please click here to purchase the Baritone version.

The Sephardic culture originates from the Jewish population of Spain that was banished at the end of the 15th century and afterwards spread to the whole of the Mediterranean area, the Balkan and North Africa. Its unique Spanish dialect Ladino was preserved, finding musical expression in ballads, lyrical and paraliturgical songs for the most part. The choir conductor and composer Ohad Stolarz took eight of these Sephardic Folk Songs and arranged them as a cappella settings for four-part mixed choir. These arrangements may be performed both as a cycle and individually, being also suitable for non-professional choirs due to their lack of difficulty. The musically and harmonically colorful, partly also exotic pieces therefore present an enrichment for the program of every interculturally interested choir. The informative preface and the translations of the lyrics into German and English enable the content-related engagement with Sephardic culture, too. Further choral literature on this topic can be found in the volumes Sepharad and Aschkenaz by Alon Wallach.Audio samples: RIAS Kammerchor, dir. This three-movement work is adapted from my Woodwind Quintet No. 3 (2008), which was originally a four-movement piano duet (2007) and a symphonic wind ensemble work (2007), arranged here for a saxophone ensemble, for premiere at the 18th World Saxophone Congress held in July 2018 in Zagreb, Croatia. The authentic folk music from China West has amazed and inspired me in the creation of this work, which has the folk music elements drawn from the folk songs Du Mu and Amaliehuo of the Zang People; Ashima of the Yi People; as well as Dou Duo and the Lusheng ensemble music of the Miao People. It's written for soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, and bass saxophones with possible multiple players for all parts. This collection of 10 Polish Folk Songs on Soldier Themes by Witold Lutoslawski, originally intended for male choir a cappella, was written in 1951. The score was published that same year by the Ministry of Defence Publishers in the series Biblioteka Muzyczna DomuWojska Polskiego no. 31. Some of the songs (numbers 4, 5, 6) were also published by PWM Edition in Krakow (1945) in the collection Pod jaworem (Under the Sycamore Tree) - a selection of Polish folk songs arranged for male choir a cappella, edited by Jozef K. Lasocki. 10 Polish Folk Songs... together with the 1951 cycle of four songs (Wyszlabym ja, Sluzba Polsce, Zelazny marsz and Naprzod idziemy) and the nine-bar Lord Tennyson Song written many years later (as an occasional gift for Robin Boyle) are the only songs written for a cappella choir by Witold Lutoslawski. Numerous questions from famous choral conductors from home and abroad persuaded me to undertake to make this edition of 10 Polish Folk Songs... for mixed choir a cappella. Ralph Vaughan Williams' (1872-1958) English Folk Songs Suite, IRV 16, consists of three movements, the first two of which are based on the folk songs Seventeen Come Sunday and My Bonny Boy; the third adapts four songs from the Somerset region collected by Cecil Sharp. The English Folk Songs Suite quotes the Christmas carol Dives and Lazarus, which Vaughan Williams later published five variations of for harp and string orchestra. Gordon Jacob, a student of Vaughan Williams, arranged this version for orchestra. An earlier version of the English Folk Songs Suite, written for military band, premiered at Kneller Hall in Twickenham, England in July 1923. Instrumentation: 2(2nd dPicc).1.2.1: 2.2.2.0: Timp:Perc(2-3): Str(9.8.7.6.5 in set). Reprint edition.

As a part of the collection of love songs for the prizewinning LIEDERPROJEKT, several new arrangements have been created for soprano and string quartet that can be heard on the two Liebeslieder CDs (83.028 and 83.029). The arrangements are by Andreas N. Tarkmann, emeritus professor for instrumentation and arrangement at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts. Four English songs make up the main part of the collection: Purcell's If music be the food of love and Morely's It was a lover and his lass as well as the two folk melodies Down by the Salley gardens and Greensleeves. In contrast, the painfully beautiful Finnish folk song Kukkuu and the slow pavane Belle qui tien ma vie, from the pen of Thoinot Arbeau, are included. It is a coronation for all musically oriented wedding feasts! Score available separately - see item CA.240800.

From the preface:
The aim of the publication of these four-handed piano compositions is to fill a void within the sphere of sight-reading(and almost sight-reading) at the beginner and intermediate level. These three volumes together contain 36 Nordic folk songs from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and theFaroe Islands. The selection is based first and foremost on their being well suited to the instrumental expressivepossibilit ies of the piano, and being good representatives of the rich and atmospheric Nordic musical heritage. When one practises sight-reading on one’s own it is tempting to stop as onegoes along, because the desire to playthe correct notes is often given priority at the expense of the rhythm and expression.Music without an organic pulse will leave the player with an unsatisfactory feeling of stress and failure, and thestream of thought will not form part of a natural flow. Good sight-reading training is therefore ensemble playing, where the teacher supports the pulse and rhythm. In many other publications of four-handed duets the secundo part is written in two bass clefs, and the primo part in twotreble clefs. Reading this untrained combination of clefs, along with the stressful fact that the music has never beenseen nor heard before, can confuse the pupil. In volumes 1 and 2 the secundo part, which is intended for the pupil, is therefore notated in a treble clef and bassclef, as piano music for two hands is usually notated. In volume 3 the degree of difficulty is more varied, but in mostof the pieces improvisation is an interposed element in the primo part, being therefore a good challenge for the pupil. In the improvisatory sections a chord or a scale is notated. These can form the tonal starting point, but here too thepupil is encouraged to experiment with, for example, the shift between major and minor thirds, and between the high andlow sixth and seventh.
