This collection of motets for SA(T)B voices is the ideal supplement for advanced choral conducting and rehearsal methods courses. Each brief motet incorporates musical characteristics that require conductors to execute a variety of skills and techniques, including dynamic changes, cues and preparations, tempo changes, legato and staccato patterns, the use of the left hand, and more. These original motets feature fragments of standard Latin text with relatively simple but musically interesting construction, flexible tenor and bass voicing, and optional piano accompaniment—maki ng them well suited for standalone performance in church and school settings as well. A brief note for conductors precedes each work, and the booklet concludes with a concise but masterful guide to score study as well as an evaluation rubric for student conductors. A beautiful and versatile collection of motets for any context! Richard Nance brings over forty-five years of teaching experience with public school, church, community, and collegiate choirs to the composition of this collection of motets. He has many years of experience teaching conducting and music methods courses at Pacific Lutheran University, and his choirs have regularly performed at conferences sponsored by ACDA, NAfME, and NCCO. He has also published several choral works and has a featured series with Walton Music.

Johann Kuhnau's extant vocal works will be fully complete in the Breitkopf & Hartel catalogue in coming years. These are cantatas as a rule, but at least works with instrumental accompaniment. The Three Motets in this volume are therefore unique, including in addition to the well known Tristis est anima mea, also the two other extant Kuhnau motets Ach Gott, wie lasst du mich verstarren, as well as Gott hat uns nicht gesetzt zum Zorn. Each one, of five parts (with the tenor or canto part doubled), these masterpieces round out the picture of Johann Kuhnau, Johann Sebastian Bach's predecessor as St. Thomas cantor. Really interesting. Kuhnau shows a real feeling for the texts he is setting, with effective chromaticism in the doleful 'Tristis est anima mea'.(Jeremy Jackman, Choir & Organ).

Robe rt White, Christopher Tye's successor at Ely Cathedral, composed sacred settings that fairly reflect the religious and political upheavals of mid 16th-century England. In his polyphonic psalm motets, especially, he matched in excellence his contemporaries such as Byrd and Mundy, and absorbed many elements from the various psalm-setting styles of the time. Individual titles from this volume are available as Adobe PDF files...

Foll owing the complete collection of Heinrich von Herzogenberg's secular choral music (winner of the Music Edition Prize 2011), Carus has published Volume 2, the complete sacred a cappella choral works. The editor is once again Konrad Klek, who describes in detail the circumstances surrounding the composition of these works. In addition to the five cycles of Liturgische Gesange for various services during the church year, the original liturgical integration of the choral music is explained in detail. The four to eight-voice motet Mitten wir im Leben sind from 1881, composed in reaction to a catastrophic fire, is a first edition from the manuscript. Of the nine additional motets, until now two were not available: a festive five-part motet for Pentecost and the great double chorus for the silver anniversary of Mendelssohn's daughter, Lili Wach. Smaller choral settings for specific occasions (e.g., weddings) round out the picture. The Begrabnis-Gesang (funeral lament) for tenor solo and men's choir at the end of this volume, with his own words as well as music, is a very personal offering by the composer to the widow of his deceased friend, Philipp Spitta. All the works are also available in separate editions.
