Up to now, Schuberts most popular early mass has often been performed with strings alone. The wind parts added to the autograph by Ferdinand Schubert at a later date were considered inauthentic. Today, over a century later, the set of parts written by Franz Schubert himself has been rediscovered in Klosterneuburg. It contains parts for trumpet and timpani which are thus clearly authorized by the composer. There is also a figured organ part, which guarantees that the continuo can now be realized without misinterpretation. (Das Liebhaberorchester)Until the late 20th century, Franz Schubert's most popular early mass was often performed with strings alone. However, a set of parts written by Schubert himself was discovered in the 1980s in Klosterneuburg.

Franz Schubert's Mass in G major is one of the most popular settings of the mass ordinary: the charming song-like melodic writing, especially in the Kyrie and the Credo, forms a magical counterpoint to more concertante passages in the Gloria and the Sanctus. For a long time it was thought that Schubert's final version was scored for purely string orchestra, whilst a version with wind, brass, and timpani was thought to be an expanded orchestration by his brother Ferdinand Schubert. However, since the mid-1990s it has been known that the parts for trumpets and timpani were additionally composed by Franz Schubert himself for use ad libitum. The present edition offers this Klosterneuburg Version - with trumpets and timpani ad libitum, but without Ferdinand's wind parts - in an Urtext edition reflecting Schubert's own intended orchestration. This work is available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.4067500.

We know relatively little about the genesis of Schubertâ??s Mass in E-flat major (D 950) which he completed in 1828, a few months before his death. The work was not performed during his lifetime and we can only speculate what might have caused the composer to write this Missa solemnis. In the preface to this volume of the New Schubert Edition, editor Rudolf Faber assembles all documented facts. Furthermore, he focuses on the accents, which are such a characteristic element of Schubertâ??s autograph scores, and explains how Schubert used them in a very differentiated manner, in particular in the Mass in E-flat major. In order to do justice to these subtle differences, the New Schubert Edition has introduced a new symbol: an accent which is flexible with regard to its length and which makes it possible to visualize Schubertâ??s sophisticated employment of emphasis and accentuation. The work is scored for large orchestra (without flutes), chorus, and one soprano as well as two tenors as soloists. In Schubertâ??s autograph the organ is not explicitly called for, but Ferdinand Schubert added an organ part for the posthumous premiere on 4 October 1829 at the Dreifaltigkeitskirche of Vienna Alservorstadt.

Ferdinand Schubert liked the Salve Regina in F (1815) so much that he asked his brother Franz to compose wind parts for it. The piece was published in 1825 in Vienna by Diabelli with winds instruments under the title Zweytes Offertorium and in 1888 it was included in this version in the old Schubert edition as well as in all other editions published since then. The new Carus includes both versions and it is printed so they may be compared. This offers smaller ensembles an alternative to perform the work without winds and this version also has the added charm of being the original. Score and part available separately - see item CA.7005600.
