Henk Hogestein has created a calm, yet uplifting arrangement of the famous Irish song Believe Me, if all these Endearing Young Charms. The melody displays the very best of Irish tradition with the words coming from a poem by Thomas Moore about love that goes above and beyond physical beauty. Irish Charms will make a wonderful inspirational interlude at any concert. In Irish Charms verarbeitete Henk Hogestein das ruhige, stimmungsvolle irische Lied Believe Me, if All those Endearing Young Charms. Believe Me, if All those Endearing Young Charms è una delle più belle pagine dedicata alla moglie malata.

Merry-Go-Round is a mini concerto for band in which each section takes a turn as soloist. On a merry-go-round the viewpoint is constantly changing, this being portrayed by different instrumental groups playing variations on the main theme, continually coming to the fore. This attractive work will bring all the excitement of the fairground to your concert.

Hora Est! (Latin for ‘it is time!’) was composed to bid adieu to Sjoerd de Boer’s following forty years as conductor of the Chr. Fanfare Band, based in the town of Wjelsryp in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, this small phrase, hora est, is traditionally said upon awarding a university doctorate at graduation ceremonies. The composition was written with Sjoerd de Boer firmly in mind, mirroring various aspects of his life. The main motif of the work consists of three notes, forming his initials: S (Eb) D B. At a certain point, the music is interrupted by a thunderstorm and heavy rain (forever a bad omen: the debut for this work took place a day after such a deluge, but fortunately their open-air concert was met with clear blue skies.) The fanfare then plays an Italianesque march, with the motif of de Boer’s initials interwoven throughout. The work re-uses this motif twice towards the end of the piece as one might expect, by the saxophones to create a festive, driven and virtuosic atmosphere. Finally, the work comes to an end with the initials motif played across the ensemble in complete unison. The powerful closing chords symbolise a fond farewell to de Boer: a driven and extremely capable conductor whose musical mark on Concordia will be felt for years to come. Hora Est! is suitable as a contest piece and would be a definite highlight for any upcoming concert.

Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. ‘Awakening Village’, the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. ‘Bintje Monument’ was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) who developed the well-known potato variety called ‘bintje’. The finale, ‘Journey into the Unknown’ refers to the band’s memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of thefolksong and fragments from ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanizing rhythmical passages.

Fanfare: Generation Next Fanfare: Generation Next is a piece I wrote in honor of Mr. Dean Zirkle, long-time director of bands at Camp Hill Senior High School (near Harrisburg, PA). I had been working as Dean's marching band arranger/composer for eleven years when he announced his upcoming retirement, and I felt compelled to write a piece to pay tribute to his remarkable contributions to music education and to the lives of his students and colleagues. The piece is built on two primary ideas. The first idea is a musical rendering of the name Dean. D, E, and A are all musical notes, but N is not. I have chosen to use a neighbor tone (a note a half-step above or below a given note) to finish off the name. (MUSIC EXAMPLE) This melodic idea occurs throughout the composition in a variety of transformations. Sometimes it is presented with the exact notes shown above; sometimes the interval structure is maintained, but the pitch series is transposed (G-A-D-C#, for example); sometimes the four notes are played in order, sometimes out of order; sometimes the first three notes (D-E-A) sound together as a chord; etc. (MUSIC EXAMPLE) The second idea is a rhythmic motive, established in the opening brass fanfare. (MUSIC EXAMPLE) This rhythm is later transformed to the accent pattern shown below, which is used as an ostinato throughout much of the allegro section of the piece.  .Fanfare: Generation Next Fanfare: Generation Next is a piece I wrote in honor of Mr. Dean Zirkle, long-time director of bands at Camp Hill Senior High School (near Harrisburg, PA).
