“Second of the series of ?Four Faces? by Darius Milhaud, II. The Wisconsonian is a short piece for Alto and Piano. Easy to play, it requires some technique of the instrument and some theory knowledge to read in different keys. The book includes the parts for Viola and Piano and for Viola only. The music is cheerful and quite fast, with the Viola part playing mainly semisquavers alternating up and down every two bars. It is supposed to represent an American girl coming from Wisconsin. She is part of the four faces with: I. The Californian girl, II. The Wisconsonian and IV. The Parisian girl. Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French modernist composer and a teacher. He was also part of the Les Six and was strongly influenced by Jazz. His opus list ended at 443.”.

“I like the idea of exploring the dramatic, ritualistic side of music. In The Mirror With Three Faces, one can look at three different faces or roles of the same person or at three distinct personalities – each with its own face. Each character (i.e. instrument) may be isolated, in conflict, or in harmony with others and itself. This trio explores individuality and ensemble, harmony and conflict, one in three or three in one – that is the ambiguous nature of this work, structured in the form of a triptych.” (Lera Auerbach).

Critics responded warmly to its colour, vitality, and strong individuality. The same qualities are found in Five Distressed Surfaces, a collection of fascinating character studies that also reflect the composer's skills as a pianist and improvisor. Though not intended to be played as a suite, the individual pieces are linked by a concern with visual, plastic and even tactile sources of inspiration, and by a quietly disruptive humour.
... Morgan Hayes' piano works, Flaking Yellow Stucco and Le Lardon, were elegantly explosive in [Stephen] Gutman's performances.

French composer and teacher, Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a prolific composer of the 20th Century as a member of 'Les Six'. His compositions remain highly regarded, Four Faces being no exception. Milhaud's compositions areinfluenced by jazz and polytonality, as exemplified in Four Faces. The fourth of Four Faces, The Parisian Woman, is an alternative, exciting piece for advanced violists. Composed in 1943, Milhaud makes use of harmonics, complexrhythms, ornamentation, altering time signatures and clefs, double stops, variation in dynamics and a wide tessitura, among other aspects. Milhaud's Four Faces is essential to all aspiring violists.

The Belgian composer Nicholas Lens presents extremely varied etudes, exercises and simple phrases with wonderfully telling titles from poetry and everyday world for children and adults. For the most part the studies are tonal and simple and have no constructed line. They are not based on any educational concept but leave the musical dramatization to the pupils and teachers: 'Notes and rhythms are just notes and rhythms, they do not have that many rules, they do not have any pretension, they are just tools for you to use to express what you want to share'.

Life has loveliness to sell, All beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff, Soaring fire that sways and sings, And children's faces looking up Holding wonder in a cup. Life has loveliness to sell, Music like a curve of gold, Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold, And for your spirit's still delight, Holy thoughts that star the night. Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost, And for a breath of ecstacy Give all you have been, or could be. --Barter from Love Songs (1918) by Sara Teasdale Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) was an American poet whose short, personal lyrics are noted for their classical simplicity and quiet intensity. Halloween is celebrated in many countries around the world on October 31. Traditionally, children go door-to-door dressed up in costumes and collect sweets and treats. A hollowed out pumpkin with a face carved into it, called a jack-o-lantern, is a traditional symbol of Halloween. Some jack-o-lanterns have scary faces, while others have fun, whimsical faces. The trombones in this piece represent the jack-o-lanterns with their whimsical faces—hence the title The Funny Pumpkins. Your trombone section will have immense fun with this new solo feature.

Berg's fantastic setting of this beloved American Christmas spiritual for advanced tenor-bass choirs tells a story of hope and meaning. The various textures throughout the a cappella arrangement with solos add much variety and musical interest. A holiday programming must!.This beloved American Christmas Spiritual, like all spirituals and/or folk songs, tells a story. This is a story of hope and meaning. The introductory solo call and response (mm. 1-7) is hymnic in nature, just to get us started. (Think of it as an effective head fake!) The entrance at m. 8 from the upper three voices (we'll call them the trio part henceforth) is pivotal. They set the stage for the conversation between the singers and the soloist for the rest of the song. From this point, the song is basically a Jazz Trio in vocal form. The bass singers take on the role of the cool dude in the back wearing dark glasses and a beret playing the string bass. They provide the driving force for the forward movement of the entire song. The trio part, basically tenors 1 & 2 and baritones, take on the role of the keyboard providing chordal structure and syncopation. Their job is to fill the listener's ear with sound and rhythm. The soloist tells the story using the known melody and text with appropriate improv opportunities to keep the listeners focused on the message of the song. There is enough repetition to make for easy learning, but this also means that the chords need to snap into position cleanly every time. The Verses are easily identified (there are three) and presented with some small variations in Verse 3 (see mm. 56-58...this only happens once). The Refrain (mm. 30-37) is the part of the song where the singers switch from the Jazz Trio role and actually become a Men's Choral Ensemble. This Refrain is repeated after Verse 3 at mm. 66-71. Between verses 2 & 3, there is not a refrain. Instead, there is a bridge repeated from the introductory material, but used this time to move us into a new key signature. This can be a very exciting moment for the singers as well as the listeners! Measures 72-75 is known in the business as a vamp. It can be repeated once and then move on, OR it can be repeated multiple times, depending on the comfort level of the soloist and the response of the audience. It is important that there be a clear signal from the conductor as to how to end the vamp and move effectively to the actual coda of the song. The ending should be sung with tight control that only looks like reckless abandon! Faces bright; words clean; melody clear; rhythms precise! Music is what feelings sound like is perhaps my favorite maxim about music. And I occasionally like to take a title—often a single word—and attempt to portray the purest expression of the feelings evoked by that word that I can.Heartfelt is probably my most successful attempt in this area. The quintuplet rhythms in this piece lend themselves surprisingly well to the emotional intent. Following the lead set by the trumpet soloist in the timing of these rhythms; the flutes and clarinets soon echo the sentiment. By the end of the piece, the entire wind ensemble has the opportunity to lock in the rhythm together (in rehearsals, m. 50 might be a good place to start this process). My recommendation is to just try to feel it, as opposed to attempting to rush four eighth notes or drag six sextuplet notes. And if there are some tears on some faces in the audience by the end of the piece, the ensemble has definitely done its job!Chris Campbell.Music is what feelings sound like is perhaps my favorite maxim about music. Our purpose in compiling this volume was to gather attractive pieces that are neither too long nor too technically difficult so that the collection would be as varied as possible and show many different 'faces' of Beethoven. In the selection process the most important consideration was the musical aspect, thus the works are arranged not in order of difficulty, but more or less by composition date. The earliest are not the easiest, and those that are playable even after just two years of piano study can be found in the middle of the collection.
