ENGELBERG is one of those tunes that musicians love to program whenever possible. While there seems to be no shortage of texts to yoke with it, Delores Dufner’s well crafted hymn, which sings of Christ our Light, was written specifically for the tune, creating a natural pairing that we think Stanford would have appreciated! Powell’s setting with brass quartet captures the grandeur of the tune.

Arranged for SATB choir, two keyboards, strings, and optional harp, with soprano, tenor (optional) and baritone soloists, this fresh and unorthodox interpretation reflects on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. This final movement of the Requiem is set for SATB chorus and two or three soloists. Lilting triads begin the movement. The “Lux Aeterna” is set for soloists with choir accompaniment. There is a restatement of “Lead, Kindly Light” from movement 4, transformed a bit, for soloist with choir accompanying, then the choir sings this material in unison in a powerful, climactic passage. “Requiem aeternum” from the first movement is heard again here with a gently pulsing accompaniment, and the work ends quietly “Luceat eis.” Duration 8:59.

Eternal Source of Light Divine is an aria from G. F. Handel's secular cantata Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne (HVW 74). While this particular aria is immensely among trumpeters and sopranos (who generally sing the vocal line an octave above the original), Handel intended the line to be sung by an alto voice. In this arrangement for trumpet and organ, Justin Bland has kept the vocal line (now played by the right hand of the organist) in the octave in which Handel wrote it. The original notes of the trumpet part also remain unchanged, allowing the part to easily be played on both modern and baroque/natural trumpets. Although the aria was written in D major, a version in C major is also included, allowing for a greater number of possibilities of performance. For example, if an organ at A=466 is used, the C major version can be used so that the resulting performance sounds in D major at A=415.

Otto M. Schwarz was asked by a friend to compose a chorale for the funeral of his child. Lux Aeterna (The Eternal Light) is actuallypart of the requiem mass, but in this composition, there is no reference to the original Latin text. People who recount near-death experiences often report a bright light. The music moves back and forth between passages that are sad, optimistic, and imploring in nature, posing questions that cannot be answered. The end of the piece comes, however, with a conciliatory major chord that reflectsthe calm and warmth of this light that promises redemption.
