Unusually for him, Davies starts his Bassoon Concerto not with slow music but with speed and brilliance: the opening is a Presto, initiated by the strings, and only at the entry of the soloist does the tempo relax to that of a real introduction. Out of this grow a big dancing Allegro. The slow movement begins and ends with a simple song, around fantastical ornamentation from the soloist. The finale is again a recitative and dance, with a slow coda. The whole work is an immense show of stamina, poetry and athleticism for the bassoon, set against an orchestra coloured by low wind (alto flute, clarinet in A, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, horns). Bassoon part with piano reduction of the orchestral score.

The solo flute here is kept in high profile by the absence from the orchestra not only of other flutes, but also of violins and oboes; in addition, the trumpets are used sparingly (they do not, for instance, play in the slow movement), so that for much of the time the flute is playing against a mellow ensemble of clarinets, horns, bassoons and low strings. If this is, nevertheless, one of Davies's most open-spirited pieces, that comes partly from the ready flights of the soloist, partly from its glockenspiel accompaniments in the outer movements (replaced by ticking claves in the Adagio), partly from the dancing character of so much of the music, and partly from the harmonic clarity, in a light region not far from C minor. Among Vivaldi's many flute and recorder concertos, two, both for transverse flute, were known until a few years ago only in incomplete form: RV 431 and 432. Both are written in the comfortable and expressive key of E minor, are transmitted in autograph manuscripts and lack their second movement (RV 432 also lacks its third movement). The seemingly enigmatic instruction “Grave sopra il libro” replacing the second movement has given rise to the most fanciful hypotheses.The discovery in Edinburgh, in 2010, of a concerto for transverse flute in D minor entitled “Il gran Mogol” suddenly shed light on the situation: this was an earlier version of RV 431, now complete with its middle movement, a “Larghetto” that is very possibly identical with the one missing in RV 431. This “Gran Mogol”, which belonged to Robert Kerr, a Scottish nobleman and amateur flautist, was already known by name to scholars on account of its listing in an eighteenth-century catalogue as part of a set of Vivaldi concertos bearing geographical titles: more recently, there has come to light a letter written by Vivaldi three months before his death in which the composer describes this set in detail. It is very likely that RV 431 and RV 432 belonged to this groupof works, the last known collection of its kind in Vivaldi's oeuvre.Critical Edition and Reconstruction by F. M. Sardelli.

Wolf f’s Concerto in C major for flute, strings and basso continuo has the customary three movements (Allegro Moderato, Affettuoso, Allegro), all of which are extended in form and poetic in expression, often using striking dynamic contrasts and orchestral unison writing in a way that prefigures the Sturm und Drang of the 1760s. The third movement is a true ‘applause finale’, putting the soloist through some challenging technical hoops.
