Piano reduction with solo part-In 1947 Aaron Copland accepted a commission from ...(+)
Piano reduction with solo part-In 1947 Aaron Copland accepted a commission from Benny Goodman ‘The King Of Swing’ for a piece for solo Clarinet and Orchestra. Copland always wary of repeating himself welcomed the challenge of composing a Clarinet concerto – ‘it might stimulate some fresh ideas’. He knew from the start that a bow to jazz was called for and he hoped also to demonstrate the lyrical qualities of the Clarinet. Dedicated to Goodman the Concerto for Clarinet was finished by the end of 1948. Clarinettists were soon welcoming this new virtuoso piece and it has since become a standard in the Orchestral repertoire. The concerto consists of two movements played back-to-back connected by a Clarinet cadenza. The dreamy and melodic first movement is followed by a free rondo dominated by melodic Latin American jazz themes and is resolved in the end with an elaborate coda in C major that finishes off with a Clarinet glissando – or 'smear' in jazz lingo. Originally written for Clarinet and String Orchestra with Harp and Piano in this edition Concerto for Clarinet is arranged for Clarinet with Piano accompaniment by the composer. Along the published version with the changes requested by Benny Goodman ossias from the original 1948 manuscript are included as well. Comes with a separate insert of the Clarinet score.

It is a sceneof devastation and despair and also it seemed to me of latent anger and hostility... butabove it all a serene blue sky beckons. So perhaps even in the darkest moments there is aglimmer of hope - the possibility of change. This idea became the starting point for this work - Towards the Blue - a mini concerto forclarinet who eventually becomes the leader of the group. The work starts without the clarinet and all is desolate yet fiercely argumentative discordant and uncomfortable. Suddenly the offstage clarinet is heard and the players insurprise are quietened. However when the clarinet enters and approaches with a lyricalmusical motif some of the players respond others resist. Gradually the clarinetpersuades the dissident voices to join him in a spirit of co-operation and harmony.A brief memory of the opening desolation casts a momentary shadow which is quicklydispelled by the coda marked Gioioso.'Thea Musgrave (May 13th 2010)Parts available for hire separately

With Vigour2. Free and Enigmatic3. CalmoThere is usually some sort of extra-musicalstarting point for my pieces and for the Clarinet Concerto this was ‘The Cracked Bell’ by Baudelaire. In a short space of time the work seemed to take over and move further away the original stimulus with the character andinteractive roles of the soloist and ensemble were suggested by the wintry evocative atmosphere of the poem. The piece opens with declamatory cadenza-like passages in the clarinet that are in turn commented on by theensemble. A more playful section where the clarinet line is very virtuosic leads to a long gently-unfolding melody in the ensemble that begins in the depths of the bass register and gradually gets much higher. Virtuosicclarinet lines interject against the accompaniment and both pursue their own course until culminating in a high impassioned melody for the clarinet coloured by fast-moving passage work in the higher registers of ensemble. Themovement ends with the ‘call and response’ lines of its opening. The second movement opens with an extended solo for the clarinet in its haunting chalumeau register. With each rising phrase the clarinet line gets higheruntil the ensemble enters in unison. The movement becomes much faster and energetic from this point with brisk fleeting lines for soloist and ensemble. The third movement is the most reflective of the three. It opens witha flute solo leading to the solo clarinet line and makes much of the poignant singing style which is so characteristic of the instrument. A melancholy falling passage in the ensemble becomes a recurring feature before the

It is one of Mozart's most perfect accomplishments ? a score of proud serenity transparenttexture and radiant beauty. It is also an example of Mozart's uncanny ability to combine the best parts of chamber music and concerto music. The solo clarinet leads the ensemble but does not subjugate it. There is an infinitevariety of interplay between the performing partners and all five instruments undertake the virtuoso's role at one time or another. 'The result ' says Homer Ulrich 'is a piece of music whose charm and delicacy are difficult toduplicate in the literature of strings and winds.' This deluxe 2-CD set includes the quintet in its original key with printed parts for both A and B-flat clarinets and adds a repitched version for B-flat clarinetists allowingplayers of that instrument easier execution plus the ability to learn the same fingerings as the composer's intended A clarinet for performance purposes.Includes a high-quality printed music score for B-flat clarinet; anda compact disc containing a complete version with soloist in split-channel stereo (soloist on the right channel); then a second version in full stereo of the accompaniment minus the soloist. Also includes a second compact disccontaining a recording of the quintet repitched to allow B-flat clarinetists to play the original written part for A-clarinet.

Opus 6-The Swedish composer Bernhard Henrik Crusell was long viewed as an insider tip among clarinettists; in the meantime his concertos have found their way to the concert stage. This is hardly surprising considering theenchanting music with which Crusell himself a Clarinet virtuoso of international rank has enriched the early romantic repertoire.Crusell’s works needn’t shy from a comparison with Weber’s and Spohr’sClarinet output. This Henle Urtext edition of the F-Minor Concerto marks the beginning of a new publication series of all three Clarinet concertos by Crusell which has been entrusted to the editor andclarinettist Nicolai Pfeffer. Since he combines editorial experience with many years of performance practice the works are in the best possible hands.

Stamitz: Concerto No. 3 in B Flat for Clarinet-Performed by Keith Dwyer clarinetAccompaniment: Stuttgart Festival OrchestraConductor: Emil KahnNo composer likes to write music without feeling that an artist exists both capable of and willing to playit to good advantage. When Carl Maria von Weber met Heinrich Joseph Baermann one of the greatest clarinetists of the early nineteenth century he delightedly began writing all sorts of work for him including several chamberpieces and the two famous clarinet concerti. In his F-minor Concerto No. 1 it is clear that Weber knew the virtuosity of his player-he makes the soloist range over the entire compass of his instrument and such quiet moments asdo occur are invariably surrounded by runs leaps and passagework of the utmost brilliance. A fantastic concerto. Also in this edition is Carl Stamitz's lovely B-flat-major concerto a most beautiful Classical-era work. Includes aprinted solo part for B-flat clarinet and two compact discs containing a complete version with soloist in digitally remastered stereo; then a second version of the orchestral accompaniment minus the soloist; and a -20%slow-tempo version of the accompaniments for practice purposes.

Performed by Denitza Lavchieva clarinet Accompaniment: Tempi Concertati Chamber Orchestra Conductor: Nayden Todorov Mozart did not make extensive use of the clarinet until comparatively late in his career but he wrote exquisitely for the instrument and the two scores dedicated to his friend Anton Stadler-the Quintet KV581 and the Concerto KV622-are among his most beautiful works. Both incidentally belong to the final year of his life. The Clarinet Concerto is in the conventional three movements with music that transcends conventionality in its remarkable sense of repose and serenity and what Bernhard Paumgartner has called 'its incredible warmth of tone perfectbalance and unmatched perfection of style.' The concerto had a tremendous resurgence in popularity with the release of the Academy-Award-winning 1985 film Out of Africa of which the piece formed a major element. This deluxe 2-CD set includes the concerto in its original key with printed parts for both A and B-flat clarinets and adds a repitched version for B-flat clarinetists allowing players of that instrument easier execution plus the ability to learn the same fingerings as the composer's intended A clarinet for performance purposes. in B-Dur / Bb Major-German composer Carl Stamitz wrote more than 60 concertos for Violin Viola Viola d'amore Cello Clarinet Basset Horn Flute Bassoon and other instruments. Some of the Clarinet and Viola concertos that Stamitz composed are considered to be among the finest available from the period. Stylistically Stamitz's music is not too far removed from the works of the young Mozart or those of Haydn's middle period. The Clarinet Concerto No. 3 was likely written around 1785 which was the same year that Stamitz was appointed the lead Violin of the Duc de Noailles in Paris. The style of thisconcerto reflects the usual orchestration found in the mid-eighteenth century where most of the important musical material was given to the strings while the winds were left to fill in the harmony. Carl Stamitz's style is pleasant and free-flowing as nicely illustrated in this concerto.
