Beethoven's fifth and final piano concerto is at the same time the culmination of his efforts in this genre and a reflection of all his artistic skill and expertise. The surviving manuscripts provide a clear insight into his working methods and his intentions regarding the work's performance. The editor, Jonathan Del Mar, has closely scrutinised the autograph solo piano part and reproduced Beethoven's sophisticated performance instructions for the first time in a modern edition. Among other things, this has special repercussions for the left-hand figured bass line of the piano part during the tutti passages. As with the Piano Concertos Nos. 1 to 4, the piano reduction appears with a separate solo part containing all the information needed by the soloist to conduct the ensemble from the piano.- Many wholly new corrections in the solo and orchestral parts- Piano reduction with a separate solo part, as was customary in Beethoven's day- With Beethoven's continuo figures for the first time in a modern edition / Score

D minor BWV 1052-In early 1729 Bach became director of the so-called »Scottish Collegium Musician« a music organization of students and local citizens. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe). The D-minor Concerto BWV 1052 forms the opening item in Bachâs autograph score of his six harpsichord concertos BWV 1051 to BWV 1057 (Berlin Staatsbibliothek Mus. ms. Bach P 234). Bach scholars are unanimously in agreement that the piece was transcribed from a violin concerto in the same key. The originalconcerto although no longer extant today can be reconstructed with some degree of certainty from its various transcriptions.Urtext of the New Bach EditionFull score & parts (BA5224) two-keyboard reduction (BA5224-90) and study score (TP410) format 22.5 x 16.5cm (all 6 concertos) available for sale

Based on Johann Sebastian Bach. First edition-In early 1729 Bach became director of the so-called »Scottish Collegium Musician« a music organization of students and local citizens. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe). When Johann Sebastian Bach created his six-part corpus of harpsichord concertos in 1738 (BWV 1052-1057) he gave pride of place to the Concerto in D minor BWV 1052. It has long been thought for good reasons that this piece was based on a lost violin concerto in the same key that he had already transcribed on twoprevious occasions. The second 'forerunner' of BWV 1052 is the present harpsichord concerto. It was first published by Wilhelm Rust in volume 17 of the old Bach Society Gesamtausgabe (1869) and given the number BWV 1052a in the Schmieder catalogue. Rust felt that Johann Sebastian Bach himself wrote out the principal source a set of orchestral parts preserved in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek under the shelf mark Mus. ms. St 350 and therefore treated the piece as an authentic early version of BWV 1052. Today however we know that the scribe was Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach who is generally also regarded as the work's author.Urtext of the New Bach EditionParts (BA5231) two-keyboard reduction (BA5231-90) and study score (TP410) format 22.5 x 16.5cm (all 6 concertos) available for sale

For the six concertos that make up the second part of the Op. 4 Locatelli prescribed eight parts: Violino Primo Secondo Alto è Violoncello Soli. Violino Primo Secondo Alto è Basso Ripieni. The use of such forces immediately reminds one of the Corellian concerto grosso to which Locatelli contributed also in his Op. 1 7 and 9. But though the instrumentation used in this set seems to feature a clear opposition between the concertino (with solo parts) and the ripieno (with parts that can be doubled) we here encounter a group of works that are very varied in form instrumentation and structure. Taken as a whole the concertos of the Op. 4 ideally exemplify thedevelopments of Italian Baroque instrumental music: they reveal the close kinship between the concerto grosso and the sonata (as in Concerto X); they also show the derivation of the solo concerto from the concerto grosso; and there are even hints of thematic development and tripartite structures. Also featured are dynamic markings and other performing indications that were rare for the period and show increasing attention to the precise definition of sonorities.

Concerto in D minor BWV

If Bach Was A Cellist-The purpose of the series if Bach was a cellist is to live...(+)
If Bach Was A Cellist-The purpose of the series if Bach was a cellist is to live the fantasy that everything Bach wrote he wrote for the cello. The concerto in D minor (BWV 1043) for two violins string orchestra and continuo by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is one of his most loved works. Indeed the slow movement may be one of the most popular and loved pieces in the instrumental literature. Traditionally it is believed to have been written in Köthen where he held the position of 'fürstlischer Kapellmeister' from 1717-1723 a town that saw the birth of the Brandenburg concertos and the solo works for violin and cello. The Dorian church mode (the absent Bflat in the key of Dminor) would also speak for the younger Bach. Recent research however has shown that the orchestral parts carefully written out by Bach himself and found among the papers of his son Carl Philip Emanuel date from around 1730. The sophistication of the composition also speaks for a later date than Köthen. The original score has been lost.Always in need of concert material for his 'Collegium Musicus' in Leipzig Bach made a version of the present concerto for two harpsichords (BWV 1062). The original key was transposed to C minor so that the top note would not exceed a D but remain within the range of a standard harpsichord. Another C minor concerto (BWV 1060) for two harpsi-chords often heard in an arrangement from the 1920's for violin and oboe by Max Schneider and Max Seiffert speaks for two concertos in D minor for two violins by Bach. When arranging an orchestral score for the pianoforte one has to remember that a double-bass sounds an octave lower than notated. This is a welcomed fact when dealing with two instruments that play the original solo parts an octave down. At the same time for a transcription of this kind the ambition must be to avoid the cello soloists playing in octaves with the violin tutti parts - which is what would happen were they to share the same material. This ambition made a piano reduction

Karl Kohaut (1726 - 1784) was an Austrian lutenist and composer of Czech descent considered to be one of the last important composers of music for Baroque lute. Although also a violinist active in the Viennese music scene he was most well-known as a lutenist. He composed a total of seven lute concertos during his lifetime including this Concerto in F Major No. 2 (not to be confused with his Concerto in F Major No. 1 which is considered the most popular) in three movements: Allegro moderato Andante molto and Tempo di Minuetto. In this edition Victor Van Puijenbroeck has created a piano reduction of the orchestral score and also has adapted the lute part to be played onguitar. Included are parts for both lute (the part has been adapted from lute tablature to modern notation) and guitar (capotasto). Haydn's Symphony Hob. I:89 belongs to a group of symphonies composed between the ?Paris? symphonies (Hob. I:82-87) and their ?London? counterparts (Hob. I: 93-104) the last ones he wrote before his trips to England in 1791-92 and 1794-95.The Symphony in F major is dated 1787 in the autograph score. In this work Haydn borrowed two movements from an earlier piece possibly owing to deadline pressure. The second and fourth movements are arrangements of movements 2 and 3 from his Concerto in F major Hob. VIIh:5 for two ?lire organizzate? and orchestra. The fact that he also arranged movements from his other lire concertos suggests that heregarded them as a sort of musical quarry. This at least allowed him to recycle parts of these works after his patron had probably prohibited him from offering them commercially. This edition continues the collaboration with the Henle publishing company regarding Haydn's large-scale choral works operas and symphonies. It is based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn. The complete performance material for several Sturm und Drang symphonies and all of the London and Paris symphonies is now available from Bärenreiter.
