The names of George Gershwin (1898-1937) and Ira Gershwin (1896-1983) are synonymous across the globe with American musical creativity. The Gershwin family estates, their publishers, and the University of Michigan have joined forces to produce The George and Ira Gershwin Critical EditionÂ?the first-ever scholarly edition of the Gershwins' music and lyrics. This all-new practical edition facilitates both study and performance, giving a wide audience of musicians, scholars, students, and enthusiasts alike greater insight into the GershwinsÂ? art. The goal is to create clear and definitive publications that achieve the most accurate representations possible of the Gershwin brothers' unique and pioneering creativity. This all-new critical edition of the original 1924 arrangement of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue presents an authoritative transcription of arranger Ferde Grofé's handwritten holograph score preserved in the collection of the United States Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The edition represents as best as possible the piece as premiered by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra at his â??Experiment in Modern Musicâ? concert on February 12, 1924. Grofé prepared the score for the specific talents and timbres of the Whiteman Orchestra, largely from an ink fair copy of Gershwin's two-piano short-score manuscript. Gershwin continued to modify the piano solo portion of this short score during rehearsals and, most likely, even after the premiere of the piece.

Following the model established by Bach and Chopin, George Gershwin (1898 â?? 1937) originally planned to write 24 modern preludes for piano, one in each major and relative minor key. The collection was to be called The Melting Pot as it combined cross-cultural elements of classical, popular, jazz, and blues styles. Already established as a composer of popular songs, Broadway musicals, and masterpieces like Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F, Gershwinâ??s frenetic musical activities and an early death intervened, and for various reasonsâ??only three of the completed 5-7 preludes were published in 1927. By omission and circumstance, these three compositions have endured the test of time as Gershwinâ??s Three Preludes.àThis book presents idiomatic flute/guitar arrangements of Gershwinâ??s iconic Three Preludes. The original keys of the preludes were altered to accommodate drop-D guitar tuning and highlight the strengths and tessituras of the two instruments. The music is written in standard notation only and presented in guitar and flute scores, guitar accompaniment with extensive suggested fingering, and a pull-out flute solo part with guitar cues. Includes access to an outstanding online audio recording by The Cypress Duo, featuring flutist Amanda Hoke and author/guitarist Justin Hoke.àAudi ences are going to love hearing these preludes rendered by the flute and guitar, particularly â??Prelude IIâ?Â, in Gershwinâ??s words, â??a sort of blues lullabyâ? that is familiar to many musicians and listeners alike.

Thereâ??s a Boat Datâ??s Leavinâ?? Soon for New York/It Ainâ??t Necessarily So/Summertime/I Got Plenty o' Nuttinâ?? is a song from the American opera Porgy and Bess, composed in 1935 by George Gershwin (1898-1937), to a libretto by DuBose Heyward and his brother Ira Gershwin, after Heywardâ??s novel Porgy - a story about the love between the crippled negro beggar Porgy and the girl Bess in the city of Charleston in South Carolina. The première - not a huge success - took place on 10 October 1935 in New York. With his opera, Gershwin wanted to gain recognition as a composer of classical music. Incidentally he demanded that all parts were sung by black performers; only a few unimportant parts, without sung lyrics, were allowed to be performed by white actors. This rule still applies: Gershwin has stated in the terms of his will that only black people were allowed stage the opera.Porgy and Bess has become popular only after Gershwinâ??s death. In 1959 a wonderful film was made; the soundtrack won a Grammy Award. The work is not very often performed, possibly because of the difficulty of finding a whole cast of black opera singers. However, various pieces from the opera are still regularly performed in numerous arrangements.
