Thes e TWO SUITES were composed in response to a request form Heini Schneebeli, the musical director of 'TROMBONANZA 2017'. Santa Fe in Argentina is the backdrop for this exciting annual event involving many hundreds of student and professional players.
The FIRST SUITE has three movements and is intended for a trio of younger tenor trombonists working with a teacher on bass trombone who will add richness and depth to the ensemble sound.
It is my hope that this piece will encourage, entertain and challenge student players and provide useful concert material for use in the promotion of this unique and versatile instrument.

BIG RIFF is a new work by John Frith for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. It was written as the opening Anthem for Trombonanza 2017, which is a festival takes place annually in the town of Santa Fe, Argentina.
Mr. Frith was commissioned to compose this work to open the Festival.
The music is about 5 minutes in length and features strong Latin rhythms throughout. The work builds and builds as it adds layers of complexities including a jazz solo for one of the players.
The all the middle parts are playable by intermediate performers. Part 1 can be performed on alto or tenor and goes up to high f's. Part 8 is quite low.
The work ends in a big climax after building up throughout. Very fun work to perform with a massed group.

Henry Wolking has written a brilliant suite of four dances for Trombone trio. The dances are as follows:

1. Samba (presto)
2. Slow Drag (legato)
3. Soul Strut (funky rock)
4. Square Dance (lively)

The variety of styles makes this a very entertaining work for the performers and audience. This seven minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Bartok's Allegro Barbaro, composed in 1911 is one of his most famous solo piano works, written in his typical style using folk elements based on Hungarian Pentatonic and Romanian chromatic scales. The music has even been used on a composition by the Progressive rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer from their 1970 debut album.

Ralph Sauer's brilliant arrangement for Trombone and Piano is reminiscent of the famous Trombone passage from the Miraculous Mandarin ballet suite.

This 3 minute work is suitable for advanced performers.

Faure's Les Berceaux (The Cradles), Opus 23 No. 1 written in 1879 is a song set from a poem by Prudhomme. The song's melody is simple, flowing, lyrical and sad. It beautifully describes ships as they head out to sea carrying men, lured by the mystery of the seas, rocked in the water and cradled by women and held back by the soul of The Cradles. Faure's magical enchanting style in this 3 minute work is captured perfectly by Jason Beghtol's fine arranement for Intermediate Trombone.
