Celebrated Violin virtuoso, Niccolo Paganini (1782-1840) is well-known for his Caprices for Violin, aiding violinists in their technique. Therefore, when clarinetist Ulysse Delecluse arranged a selection of the Caprices for Clarinet, it was well-received. Paganini's compositions are technically creative and demanding and Delecluse's adaptions for the Clarinet include variations in articulation, phrasing, breath marks, range and dynamics. Considering the success of Paganini's Caprices for the Violin, this versatile adaption for clarinetists cannot be missed by advanced performers of the instrument..

“Italian clarinetist and composer, Ernesto Cavallini (1807-1874) studied at the Milan Conservatory. He has been described as the ”“Paganini of the Clarinet”“ therefore, it is no surprise that his studies for the instrument, such as 30 Caprices are very well-informed. Volume 2 of Cavallini's 30 Caprices contains caprices 19 to 30. All of the studies are virtuosic, addressing features including chromaticism, scales, articulation, a wide range, breath control, intervals, variations in performance directions, dynamics and tempo, differing key signatures and time signatures, complex rhythms and ornamentation, amongst other aspects. For all advanced clarinetists, Cavallini's 30 Caprices are essential, ensuring technical progression to a high standard.”.

The name Kroll has a distinctive ring in clarinet circles as Oskar Kroll's book on the clarinet has been regarded as one of the standard treatises on clarinet playing ever since its first edition in 1944. Karl Kroll (1881-1957), father of the author Oskar and teacher of the editor Dieter Klocker, enjoyed a considerable reputation as a clarinettist during his lifetime. The 20 Caprices are short pieces, musically indebted to the late Romantic period, but incorporating a number of tricky fingerings.

Anto n Stadler’s works for solo clarinet are collected into a single volume for the first time, and include hitherto unpublished music. Three Caprices and three Fantaisies are selections of popular contemporary tunes, laced together with virtuosic clarinet writing. Sets of variations, also based on popular themes, display a compendium of classical clarinet technique. As the Saxophone is commonly associated with the jazz style, classical music for the instrument had always been lacking. Therefore, when Paul Bonneau (1918-1995) composed his Two Caprices in the style of a Waltz for Alto Saxophone and Piano, it was well-received by performers of the genre. Bonneau's composition was highly versatile, ranging from over fifty film scores, operettas, songs and other pieces for Saxophone, including a concerto. The Two Caprices in the style of a Waltz, however, were particularly acclaimed for their use of advanced techniques. The works contains typically French characteristics including chromaticism and difficult technical passages. All these elements combined make for an enjoyable and challenging piece for saxophonists..
