Casanova captured every woman's heart with great ease and as a result made the Venetian men quite resentful. Accused by the inquisition, he fled the oppressive town of Venice. Johan de Meij created this fantastic work for solo cello and concert band based on this infamous story.

Casanova esquisse un portrait musical du celebre heros venitien Giacomo Casanova. La vie tumultueuse de cet illustre seducteur et erudit, represente par le violoncelle solo, est evoquee a travers huit tableaux. Les evenements relates se concentrent sur quelques-uns des plus palpitants episodes de la vie de Casanova : son arrestation, sa captivite et son evasion de la prison de Piombi. Avec Casanova, ?uvre au caractere fortement romantique, Johan de Meij rend un hommage stylistique a Giacomo Puccini, l'un de ses compositeurs favoris. / Casanova a ete recompense du Premier prix du Concours International de Composition de Corciano en Italie (1999).
