Performed by the author on the B-flat infantry bugle each call is accompanied by historical notes and direct quotes fromthe manuals of the period. L?oeuvre traite davantage de flash-back que du souvenir concret de pensées de personnes ou d?événements.Elle est dédiée au défunt Frans Steurs qui pendant des années a inspiré l?orchestre philharmonique à la demande duquel cet ouvrage a d?ailleurs été réalisé. Le thème principal est dès lors basé sur le nom de « STEURS ». E=mi U=ut (do) R=re et S=si. Ce thème est le fil rouge musical de l?oeuvre et se décline sous différentes formes. L?oeuvre se présente sous la forme d?une histoire que le père Steurs raconte à ses deux filles lesquelles jouent de la fl?te et de la clarinette. Chacune des parties de l?oeuvre présente uncaractère narratif.1. Introduction : le thème principal apparaît pour la première fois au terme d?une brève intro menaçante.2. The Story : le père Steurs tient ses deux filles sur ses genoux et leur raconte des histoires d?antan. Le thème se décline sous différentes formes au son de la trompette et du trombone. L?histoire devient de plus en plus captivante (accelerande poco à poco agitato) jusqu?au récit passionnant d?un épisode du temps de la seconde guerre mondiale. Le père raconte ?tre traqué par l?occupant une situation palpitante musicalement traduite dans la partie3. Danger qui constitue un clin d?oeil à « vor dem Sturm » extrait de « Eine Alpensinfonie » de Richard Strauss.Vient ensuite la partie4. Fugitives laquelle décrit la fuite nocturne devant l?ennemi avec un nouveau thème dans les basses. A partir de la mesure 117 l?agressivité de la guerre est illustrée par de puissantes attaques des cuivres. Le thème principal apparaît une fois encore sous forme accélérée. A partir de la mesure 149 le deuxième thème revient.5. Dialogs : cette partie illustre les conversations entre les deux filles et leur père. Le père parle (mesure 155) les filles répondent (mesure 164 à la fl?te mesure 166 à la clarinette). A la mesure 178 le père répond à ses deux filles sur le ton du thème principal. Dramatic. A powerful message from the Father to His children. “Return to Me ” based on Isaiah 44:21-22 and 45:22 recalls times past when we may have faced trials and tribulations and strayed from God. In our darkest most difficult hours God was there. It is not He who strays from us. God is always there. Mixing lush romanticism with some unexpected harmonies and a somewhat impressionistic sounding accompaniment this moving anthem calls ushome. “Return to me for I AM GOD.”

Par TIPPETT MICHAEL SIR. Like Robert Schumann who often favoured the horn, Sir Michael Tippett who died on 8 January 1998 makes full use of the instrument‘s tonal possibilities in this work. He translated the Romantic genre of horn quartet into a modern tonal language: 'All movements contain characteristic calls and triad arpeggios. Sometimes the call itself is the theme, as in the fugue. Sometimes the calls are the accompaniment to a solo, such as in the nocturne.' (Tippett) The forms of the four movements, however, are traditional. The structure of the fist movement is reminiscent of the form of a strophic song. The second movement is an allegro, the slow third a nocturne in the traditional ABA form. And fially the last movement is a capricious fugue./ Répertoire / 4 Cors
