This volume presents easy pieces for piano by great virtuosos. It unites the two greatest, and perhaps best-known, pianists of the 19th century, Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt. The technical requirements of these works are very moderate without muting the stylistic characteristics of these two composers. The ability to play an original composition by Liszt in the first years of lessons can be very motivating for the piano student. Also featured in this collection are works by the virtuoso Ferdinand Hiller, to whom Robert Schumann dedicated his Piano Concerto. As in many of the works by Liszt and Chopin, Hiller's works are frequently reminiscent of folk music. Par CHOPIN FREDERIC. In 1845/46 Chopin composed his bel canto inspired “Barcarolle” in F-sharp major op. 60, which became a model for subsequent generations of composers. In his evaluation of the divergent and partly even contradictory sources – due to the different engraving models (Stichvorlagen) for the first editions published almost simultaneously in Paris, London, and Leipzig – the editor obtains new results and readings, especially regarding problematic passages. Chopin’s pedal indications from the other sources, which differ from the main source, are added in small print. The polonaises are regarded as one of the most important genres in the compositional oeuvre of Frédéric Chopin, some of them even as some of his most popular compositions. Their spectrum ranges from early works which can even be played by advanced beginners (e.g. Polonaise in B flat major) to demanding concert literature. The new edition of Wiener Urtext Edition is based on all relevant sources: autographs, copyist's copies, engraver's copies, first editions, as well as copies of Chopin's pupils used in their lessons. The edition's preferred main sources are each of the last published first editions which not only contain the last revisions but also provide comfortable, more transparent performance instructions. This is illustrated by the famous Polonaise in A major Op. 40/1 which is presented in the versions of the German and French first editions. Edited from the sources by Christian Ubber-Regarded as the highlight among Chopin's polonaises the great Polonaise in A flat major Op. 53 has also become known as 'octave polonaise' because of the distinctive octave passages in the middle section. As was customary at that time the work was published in a German English and French first edition each. There also exists an autograph which served as an engraver's copy for the German first edition. Some personal copies of Chopin's pupils occasionally contain entries of the composer thus providing additional information e.g. original fingerings. Unfortunately all three first editions contain a different not always reliabletext. The new edition of Wiener Urtext Edition is based substantially on the autograph and the – to a large extent – carefully revised German first edition yet also takes some variants of the French first edition into account which give the impression of a last-hand version. The problems with regard to the sources and transmission are explained in detail in the preface and the critical notes. Variants containing a specific component with regard to the performance practice are commented on in the notes on interpretation.

Characteristic for them is a turbulent middle section and a richly ornamented reprise. Chopin gave the “scherzo” a character all of its own and his second Scherzo is probably the best known of the four works that he composed in that genre. In contrast to the first Scherzo which survives only in its first editions we are fortunate in that manuscript material is also extant for the second. Nicknamed the ?Black Key Étude? Frédéric Chopin?s Etude In G Flat Major Op. 10 No. 5 is one of his most popular.
