The 17 waltzes comprising this volume are among Chopin's most popular compositions. Composed over a period of 20 years (from 1827 to 1847), only eight waltzes were published during Chopin's lifetime. Venezuelan-born Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947) entered the Paris Conservatoire at 10 years old. He received a high standard of musical education from Decombes Lavignac Dubois and Massenet before becoming a prolific and versatile composer himself writing works for all genres. For Hahn music was a magical art and hiscompositions often contain expressions of his otherwise hidden emotions and moods. With each of the ten waltzes in Premières Valses containing a variety of different features Hahn's compilation provides pleasant and evocative pieces for intermediate pianists.

The Grande Valse Brilliante In Eb Major Op.18 was Frédéric Chopin?s first waltz composition for solo Piano to be published although at the time of its release in 1834 he had already written at leastsixteen other waltzes that were either destroyed or eventually published after his death.Chopin also gave the title Grand Valse Brillante to the next three waltzes in the Op. 34 set published in1838.This waltz has been orchestrated for ballet by several composers including Igor Stravinsky Alexander Gretchaninov Gordon Jacob Roy Douglas and Benjamin Britten.The Henle Urtext Edition has been edited byEwald Zimmermann and includes fingering by Hans-Martin Theopold.

In summer 1881 Franz Liszt composed a work that he called ?Valse Oubliée? (Forgotten waltz) in a letter to his publisher. The work is reminiscent of the appealing Piano waltzes that the composer usedto write when he was younger although there is a certain distance to the usual waltz style. Liszt by no means renounces virtuosity and elegance but rather infuses these characteristics with nostalgia and irony byembedding typical melodic and rhythmic elements of salon waltzes in innovative harmonically alienating progressions. In the years that followed he wrote three further ?Valses Oubliées? yet number 1 published here in a single edition has remained the best-loved of these ?Forgotten waltzes? by far.

Brahms? popular 16 ?Waltzes? opus 39 composed in 1866 for four hands were transcribed by Brahms one year later for two hands. At the request of his publisher Brahms also wrote an easier version of the work for solo piano. Brahms himself described the first version as suitable for 'reasonable hands' that is for proficient players and the easier version as 'perhaps for prettier hands' that is for domestic music-making. He initially described the latter version to his publisher as a 'children?s edition'. The catchy and musically easily accessible pieces are among the composer?s most popular works and are particularly suitable for piano students and lovers of the Romanticrepertoire.Both versions of the ?Waltzes? op. 39 (BA 9602 BA 9603) are available in separate editions and form an important contribution to Bärenreiter?s series of Brahms?s works in scholarly-critical Urtext editions.
